Brule

Good Luck and post how you did, I am headed to duluth this weekend for a wedding, I might try to sneak away and see if I can work in another trip since I will be so close. From what I gather later in the evening the better bite.

Again good luck!

I read on another site that someone caught a 34 inch lake run brown out of there, so the lake runs are running.

I'm thinking of heading up there in a few weeks to fish for them. I'll post how I do.

I've said this so many times I'm tired of hearing myself say it. I've got to make it up to the big lake to fish for some of the running fish. I hope I can make it up there this fall and hopefully hook into one of those lake grown monsters. I couldn't imagine a 34 inch brown pulling on the end of my fly-rod!

has anyone on here hit the brule yet this year for lake run browns? i find it hard to believe there would be many fish in the river with the hot weather this summer and the extremely low water levels. if so has anyone heard if any have made it up to the big lake area yet? i may give it a shot tonight and let you guys know what the scoop is over there.

Quick, I was out last night from 9pm till around 1:30am.The cloud cover started breaking up around 1am,so i left shorty after. It started out slow, one fish on shortly after I got there(lost it)then nothing till midnight.I went 2 for 4 on lake runs after that. The fish are in the river but not in any real numbers yet.

hit the brule under a bright moon and northern lights a few nights back and went 0 for 3 while losing a very large fish in the process. plan on heading back tonight to up my batting average a little. seemed like peak activity time was between one and two am.

Quick, have you ever read the book "stories of the old duck hunters and other drivel" by Gordon Macqarrie? Its stories about a guy many years ago that lived in this area. He talks about some of his nights fishing the Brule River for browns. Interesting reading for an outdoorsman. Any way, good luck and let us know how you do.

no i haven't read it, but i would love to if i can find it somewhere. well i did get out tonight and got two nice browns. once was on a white mann's a-minus and the other was on a firetiger j-9. with the cloud cover the fish were more active it seemed with fish slapping the water every minute or so. Had the whole area to myself and talk about a peaceful night. and you might be happy to know that both fish were released to be caught again someday.

Hey Quick . . . What hours during the day are prime to fish for the lake run browns? I'm headed up there in mid-September and would like to be there at the most opportune times to catch one as I don't think I'll have a full day to fish. I've heard late afternoon, dusk and into the evening. Sounds like it could be early morning 1am to 2am would be best?

Do you ever fly-fish for the lake runs in the Brule? If so, what kind of flies and sizes you usually use? Ren suggested a mouse pattern, or something big and bushy on top at night. Just trying to get as many suggestions as possible because I haven't fished for lake runs before.

Thanks.

i am no expert when it comes to the browns, but from what i have heard and experienced it seems midnight to 2 am is the best time on a cloudy night. I have not tried my fly rod yet at night, but i have picked up browns on wooly buggers and stone flies fishing for steelhead during the day.

You guy's are making me homesick for the Brule. I used to fish it frequently years ago when my trout fishing buddy was still living. Haven't been there in quite a while but sure would love to hit it again. Really don't like to go that far all by myself so if there are any other trout freaks that would like to hook up, give me a holler. I live in Warroad now so anybody living along the way from here to Duluth I could easily stop and pick up. My favorite area was either the Sucker Hole or the Meadows. I've learned a few new tricks to use on the Brule since the last time I was there. Sure would enjoy finding out if they work! Tight lines! 1DIRTBALL wink.gif

Anybody been there recently? I'm making another trip right past it but I might fish the Brule later this week. I stopped to wet a line last week and nobody was doing much. I've been fishing near Bayfield and the mileage is killing me. It'd be good to hear a few recent reports from anyone that's been on the Brule.

I was there for three hours 2 Saturdays ago and caught one legal steelie. Very fresh, and really spunky. I got there 3 days after they had some rain, and I'll be there this weekend and it looks like there getting rain as I type this. They really need it, the water has been very low the past month or so.

got out to the brule a few times over the last week, pretty slow still, i only managed to land one steelie and lost a few others. a few cohos and browns are being pulled out and things should be heating up here pretty soon. i've also been hitting a few spots up around bayfield with very good results but theres defenetly something special about the brule that few rivers can touch.

Sorry Bruledrifter...did I say try the Brule river? I thought I said try the Amnicon. I was out on the Brule yesterday and nothing happened. Lots of chubs and rainbows but not even a good bite. I might have to run back to bayfield after this rain...maybe tmrw.

Quick did you ever get my mail? when you get a chance give me a holler at [email protected] maybe we can compare notes on the fishing near Bayfield.

Just an unfortunate note, just talked to a friend who lives on the Brule near Winnie and he said that they received close to 4 in. of rain from last night until today and it is still raining. He also said that they are predicting another 2 or 3. As of right now the whole river is blown out, and with the addition of more rain he thinks it may flood. He suggests that it may take at least 3 to 4 days to settle down. He also says that some of the other tribs near there will be even worse.

Don't shoot the messanger.

Mike

Who thinks that in 4 to 5 days it's going to be good!

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
