Portable Modification Get Together RECAP!!!!

Matt Johnson

Recommended Posts

Thanks Matt for setting up the get together. The kids had a great time putting together the house. If I had know they could do it that well I would have had them do mine instead of spending the better part of a day on it. The mods were great I've already got some Aluminum on order for my house and the ideas are running in my head. Sometimes it's hard to work on a 90+ degree day thinking about ice fishing. It was great to meet every body and enjoy some fellowship and put some faces to the names thanks again.

It was truly a pleasure meeting all of you and getting a chance to talk a bit with everyone. Hopefully we can all do this again in the near future for an early ice Get Together somewhere. And then we can put those modifications to work grin.gif

Good Fishin,

Hey guys, it was a pleasure meeting you all too. Some names I forgot, some names I remembered so I won't try to make a list.

I have had a lot of fun working on improving my icehouses over the last couple years and I hope everyone got some sort of inspiration from them. All I know is my fishing has improved because of my organization related to my house mods.

While my mods might not be perfect for the rest of you, I think it will help generate ideas. Heck, maybe they are perfect. grin.gif

I would like to see a post in the near future as winter approaches about ice house modifications again. I would like to see a bunch of new & better ideas that have come about because of this Get-Together and from previous modifications that have been done.

wished I would have stumbled across this sooner - woulda been there.

another idea I did not see mentioned is a "Bucket Buddy". It is a sleeve that fits down the inside of a 5 gallon bucket and often used by plumbers or contractors. Great idea to hold the elctrical tape, clippers, auger extension, and the like.

think ice.

I was just thinking this would show Woody's complete mod. Place to hang a lantern, depth finder swivels, hooks for a chisel. And, all of the aluminum framing breaks down to fit in the sled box. Woody wants to add cup holders and some other mods yet. He's quite handy with aluminum.

Yeah, no doubt about that! Woody has a skill with that aluminum work! Did anyone who attended the event get a chance to see the inside of the bed of his truck? He built a pretty cool roll-out bed that really impressed me.

By the way Woody, how'd those rope lights work out for you?

Good Fishin,

Thanks for the compliments guys. And thanks to Hanson for the inspiration to modify a sled, and now my portable. Seeing what you had done last year is what gave me the desire to try something "new". Dave, sheesh here I thought I had managed to stay out of the pics, smirk.gif.

When we got home after the get together, my son JD was pretty anxious to start on the rope lights. I ran a length up the pole, to the middle, then did the same with the other side, and connected them to my battery (lawnmower batt. for now). I was pleased with how much light I got from just one "poles" worth. So I am in the process of finishing it up this week or coming weekend. Been too busy working, just got done with 16 hrs straight today. So it is looking more like a weekend project. One thing I learned real fast about the rope lights, is there is a small scissors symbol on it, that is where to cut them, NOT where it fits. A couple of the lights didn't work, but the rest of the strand did. There were no instructions, which is ok, real men don't need no stinkin instructions! grin.gif So I learn from trial and error. When I get it finished, I'll get some pics to post.

Woody's set-up was a piece of work! For those who like the open ice, this was something to behold! The only thing I saw missing was the toilet paper roll (lol), but I'm certain that one could be incorporated in the rigging. Woody's was yet another example of creativeness driven by imagination.

Another person had a double wide made from an insulated fabric that I really took a shine to.

At the end of the upcoming ice season, I would like to see a lay-out of every "new" innovation laid out to look at and include the whole nine yards from the smallest tackle item to the largest wheeled shack. It would have to be an impressive display.

Hey gents. I have a quick question in regards to the materials for any of the modifications. I have an otter lodge, and was planning some modifications, and I planned on using aluminum angle-iron for a frame with some sort of plywood with carpet over the top of it. My question is this: do you use marine-grade plywood or regular plywood, and whatever the case, what thickness?

Stick-

I used run-of-the-mill 1/2" Plywood.

Its economical, "lighter", and readily available. I figure if it ever starts to fall apart, I'll just build a new one.

I don't see a reason why you would want to use treated or marine grade unless you absolutely want it to last for 10+ years.

Stick- if you use regular plywood just put some sealer on it. I have never really sealed plywood but if it works for trim and cabinets why not plywood!! If it works I am sure it will add a few years of life to it and it is very inexpensive and easy!!

Thanks guys. I figured 1/2 should be fine and I was concerned about the additional weight of green treated. I figure that the plywood isn't really that exposed either since it's not like a boat that's getting soaked by rain (and hopefully fish slime). Now that I mention it, I'd be tickled to be laying a new floor each year due to abundance of fish slime.

I sure did get some photos. I'm trying to catch some fish to burn up the rest of the film in the camera. Darn film cameras. grin.gif I'm going to get a digital one of these days.

Anyway, I'll get those photos posted in this thread once they are developed.

    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
    • Sketti...  not out of a jar either!
    • Lol yeah I watched that
    • I went ahead and watched some of the MLF coverage.  Wheeler didn’t make the cut but the bigger story was the Poche/Avera fallout.   Kinda funny listening to both sides of the story and putting together the scenario, reading between the lines.
