Tough Metro Bite?

So is it just me or are there people catching nice bass still? OK besides Leech21 on Green, but anyone else? I can't find a consistent pattern. Ok any pattern for that matter. 3 weeks ago I thought I was all that. Cripes, that was wrong. I'm still fishing shallow and nada in the slop, docks, inside weedline, reeds.

I'm using senkos, flukes, crankbait, buzz baits, topwater frog, spinerbaits and what not.

I haven't really targeted the deep weededge, but I think that's my next option. Any one else care to share? Any one besides Leech21 and monster smallie stories? smirk.gif

I havnt fished bass for a week but I started noticing the same thing the last few trips out for bass. I still got them, just more time between the fish. I think the fish are spreading out to their summer locations now that the spawn has finished.

Ebass, I have pics posted now under my post about the smallies, LOL. The thing is with Green is that I believe the fish are actually spawning now. The fish we are getting into are either really fat still or pretty beat up looking. Usually this time of year the smallies have moved off this spot and into deeper water. I believe because of the colder spring and cooler water temps the smallies are a little behind. Also keep in mind Green is a BIG, deep lake. I could be totally wrong, but I'd like to think I know what I'm talking about grin.gif

I honestly didn't start bass fishing this year until a couple weeks ago, and I have found it close to spectacular. However, that might be because the lakes I fished I know pretty well, and the fish were on the bite. Not giant fish, but plenty between 2 and 3 lbs.

I don't know what to say. It might just depend on the lake you're fishing. I really don't like bass fishing until after the 4th of July. That's when big fish start showing up and big schools start swimming. Bass fishing gets exceptionally fun then. I bet this weekend, deeper fish are a smokin'.

Sweet Leech I'll go check them out. I don't recall last year having a lull like this. I do agree that the bass are all over right now. Plus the lakes are getting rocked with boat traffic. Tonka is a joke right now with all the 30' cruizers. However, on a cloudy day the lake is almost empty.

I will fish harder and I have been trying new areas. I'm going to look deeper and see what I can muster up.

Thanks fellas

I think you may be missing out. Spring time can be really good for numbers and good size fish and lots of times they arnt to hard to find.

But the walleyes and panfish aren't hard to find either. Bass don't have the tendancy to turn into virtual thin air come mid summer.

A guy has got to be a well rounded fisherman. You can learn lots fishing those other fish that will help you in your bass exploits.

I fished the early season for years. The best bite is from the 4th on. cool.gif

Was out last night on a south metro lake/pond(no gas motors) and did pretty well. Prior to that outing the bite was pretty tough, but now I think I may have figured them out(same thing happened last year).

I fished in these milfoil like mats in about 6-10FOW. I was using a black/blue tube and pitching into the thick mat and just letting in sink. When I felt a tap or the bait stop one was there.

It was a really fun night 7 bass ranging from 15-19 inches. Hope to get out agian tonight to see if can't get some more

The last two days I have been fishing, and since the recent streak of warm weather fishing has been phenomenal... big fish too. Last week the fish were very scattered with the occasional big fish (over 4lbs.). I have found the fish to have moved slightly deeper and schooled up. Fishing when from mild to HOT in less than a week. Hot baits have been 7" Berkley Powerworms and Outkast Prostaff jigs (Green Craw). Good Luck!

i caught a really nice 20" bass yesterday on a lake near my parent's house out in hopkins...

the day before that i had a monster one spit the plug, and about 6 other bass hit out on calhoun... they weren't hitting aggressively, and unfotunately i couldn't land a single one.

Big Mike and I are hitting up Tonka tonight. I will try some docks and if nada move to the weededge and find those milfoil mats. Thanks fellas, at least you gave me hope. smile.gif

I would say the bite has been strong. Just last night fished Denny's Wednesday nite tournament on tonka and the winning 5 fish weight was 22+ lbs over a 4 Pound avg. Big fish was 6.33 with about 5-8 fish over 5 lbs frpm the other bags. We caught over 25 fish some better then others ended up 5th with just under 17 lbs. So I would say the bite is on!!

I can see what you mean by walleyes getting harder to catch while bass bite being good most open water.

I'm not strictly a bass guy either. I fish walleyes from Wisconsin opener (st. croix) until bass opener. During the summer I make trips here and there for other species too.

I completely agree that knowing how to catch lots of species and not just one or two makes you much better/more adaptable fisherman.

Say Ferris, can you tell us more about the Denny's results the other night. Were you fishing milfoil with jigs? Do you know what the winners were doing?

Fish from all over the lake? Dark water ws clear?

Thanks pal

You can get the full results on Denny's web site if you google Denny's super 30 you should be fine, all the results will be posted soon if not yet. I have no idea what the guys that won were doing not a lot of chat about patterns and techniques at weigh in's. I do not fish milfoil or jigs I was in clear water and caught fish in many different spots so I think they are very active. Thats about all I can tell you. Good luck with your bassin!!

Well I suck and Big Mike rocks. We fished Wayzata and BM found a pattern of crankbaits and windy shoreline. I held on for dear life in the white caps most of the time. I don't know how many times I almost fell in.

Ebass - thanks for the outing yesterday. You don't suck... if I was the one trying to man the trolling motor (and hang on for your life on the platform) in 30-40mph wind gusts...not to mention big rolling swells, I would suck too! It was a good night for bassin', a bad night for boating! LOL. Thanks to Eb's navigation at the helm we caught about 10-12 bass with most over 12+. Largest of the night was 17+''. Not bad for a hot and windy day!
