Pheasant hatch

Recommended Posts

Sibley county has had a poor year for hatching.Iam in the rural area most of the day and I have not seen any young chicks yet except in town.HAHA.Way to much rain.Last year things were looking good until the rains came, same as this year.I would almost bet,bad hatch and low counts this year again around my area. All the farmers say the same thing, bad sign as the farmers are in the field all day and see more than anyone.Sorry for the terrible report.

I'm thinking the rains the past 3 weeks have had a negative impact all across the state as well as my favorite hunting haunts in ND. While we've had steady, persistent rains in MN, the SE portion of ND was hammered with heavy rains and flooding. Really stinks....it was adding up to be a great year.

Can't say for certain the weather is to blame here but haven't seen pheasant chicks anywhere either. I have seen evidence of renesting, part of which I would attribute to the high varmint population. The number of raccoons squashed on the road for this time of the year is unreal and it isn't just young ones. Sweet corn plantings were substantially increased over SC MN last year and looks like one can see the result. Wonder what the roads will look like when sweet corn harvest starts?

I live in SE ND and can confirm what springerguy1 said... I drove a few section lines on the way home last week and saw about 5 hen pheasants... only one of which had any chicks with it... we've received 8" of rain since June 1st.. most of which has come down in 1 - 2" increments in a relatively short amount of time...

Hopefully they all renest.. otherwise they'll be down this year... that's for sure.

Saw my first brood last nite. They were the size of a robin and looked very good. Counted 10 with one hen. Hope all the broods are that good.

I have yet to see a brood, but I haven't seen any hens either. In Pipestone Co., the weather has been cool and somewhat wet, especially in late May, but I think it's better than last year. Hopefully broods will start showing up in the next couple of weeks.

We've been seeing broods the last 10-14 day's. Some are a couple weeks old and others just a couple of day's. I've been driving the same 25 miles to work for many years and this is about as many broods as I can remember seeing! smile.gif

I just about got a brood yesterday too - managed to miss them all - must have been around 10 small chicks. I've been seeing some broods now that the road ditches have been mowed. I think we're in decect shape in west central Minnesota considering all the rain we've had. I have an uncle that works for Stevens County and he said he has seen all kinds of little pheasants while mowing ditches.

I haven't seen any myself, but my neighbor said he saw a pretty good sized brood last week sometime near our house. I've seen a lot of pheasants this spring & summer, but almost all roosters, occasionally there'll be a hen too.

Saw the first brood this AM in the road ditch near the house where the coutny mowed yesterday. Saw 5 but wouldn't be surprised if there were more in the unmowed area. These were already about meadowlark size or larger.
