Rummage Sale Jack Pot!

Why can't I be this lucky?? My brother swung by a sale on Saturday. Found a pile of cranks for $1 a piece along with a few that were $2. Jointed Shad Raps, #5's, #7's, Deep Thunderstick Jr's, Walleye Divers. Only 5 cranks were used, the rest were new in box.

All in all he got 31 cranks for $45.

Have you ever stumbled upon tackle at rummage sales for dirt cheap? I need to start looking around a bit harder!

Never. I do tag along with the wife now and then to them as well. Sporting goods are few and far between and they go quickly. I do like looking at people's garages though. You can tell a lot about a person from their garage.

Only once. Got lucky on a rainy day and bought a full tackle box at an auction for $32. The old guy who had it left in some wooden plugs that should be in a collection along with a mixture of rapalas, spinners and spoons.

No...I'm not parting with the plugs! wink.gif

Rost...Twice it has happened to me and both times it was my wife going to garage sales that pulled it off.

The first time, she must have gotten $200.00 worth of ice fishing jigs for $5.00...the womans husband had died and she was getting rid of stuff and she did'nt know what it was worth...my wife jumped on that like a duck on a Junebug!

I still have the majority of them.

The second time, I bought a bunch of Rapalas, brand new, still in the boxes, for $1.25 apiece, I believe I got 10 of them, from a medium, all the way up to the magnum floaters, I'm still using some of them.

I had a friend who was downsizing with retirement. He sold me a package deal of six tackle boxes and eight rods with reels for $100. There were 30 Rapalas in the tackle boxes and a Diawa Millionaire reel. [Please read forum policy-Please use the For Sale Forums to sell your items]

Need is questionable, depending on who you talk to. Me - yes. My wife - no. It's kind of like most other fishing equipment.

Can I at least ask kslipsinker to email me, whatever it may be about? bitacrazy at hotmail dot com.

It didn't see it as an add, just trying to get rid of stuff he didn't use to someone who could. Sorry to the moderators, didn't intend to push the rules.

I'm a garage sale addict. In fact my friends put in orders with me for stuff to find. I found Artic tip-ups almost new for two bucks apiece. Got a new Shimano reel for 2.50 because someone took it apart and put the bail spring in backwards. A friend told me to find him a power auger. I said that they're never sold at garage sales. The next week I found a Strikemaster 2000 that had been used once marked at $125. I picked it up and looked at it and the owner started bargaining. Before I said a word he had talked himself down to $100. and all I said was sold. I'd never want him negotiating my next union contract.

I grew up in a small town in southeastern MN and have had two great deals. First one would be a four year old Minnkota transome trolling motor, 36 lbs thrust for $20. The other was a 1977 Johnson 6hp for $60. Both ran great.

Not at garage sales...the good stuff goes before I get there usually. But like someone else mentioned...I have come across some good deals at auctions. Full tackle boxes anywhere from $20 to $50.

Last summer I found a kicker motor bracket for $20. It still had the orginal $125 sticker on it. The lady said her husband bought it and never used it. I was about to order one from a catalog. Talk about timing.

A little over 20 years ago I came across a 3.5' x 5' homemade collapsible fish house at a garage sale with a Heimenz fuel oil heater. The asking price was $65. Being newly married and still in college $65 was a big investment. I offered the lady $50 and she agreed. Haven't used the stove in many years, but I still use the fish house to this day.

Best part was that it fit in the hatchback of my Chevy Chevette. crazy.gif

Wow, those are some good deals. I never came across anything at gargage sales, but was reading the local paper this winter and picked up a portable ice house clam, strike master auger, sunflower heater with big tank, and 5 gallon bucket with about 6 ice sticks for $300.00, had to pull the back seat out of the car to haul the house but i am very happy with the deal.

About 20 years ago I was out driving around at lunch with a friend and we stopped by a rummage sale. Since it was raining the woman left the items in her basement.

We walked around a couple of times looking at different things but nothing interested us much. I noticed a long (2 1/2 foot) green metal tool box but passed it by a couple of times. For some reason on the 3rd time around I decided to bend over and see what was inside.

Was I shocked.....

The tool box turned into a tackle box and it was filled with old wooden plugs many still in their original boxes.

Heddons mostly but others as well. I was just getting into collecting older lures and here was a tremendous find.

I asked the old woman for a price, since it wasn't labeled, and her answer was $5.00 for the entire box.

I hesitated a minute a then did the right thing and told her what each lure was worth and how she should not sell everything for $5.00, $200 would be more like a fair price. We talked for about 30 minutes about her late husbands love of fishing and his life in general. As I was about to leave she told me to take the tackle box and lures for free. She insisted that her husband would have wanted them to go to someone who enjoyed fishing as much as he and someone that would take care of the lures and not just sell them. I refused but she was adament that I take them, they had no children or other close realitives. Finally I agreed but only if my wife and kids could take her out to Sunday brunch. This led to several years of freindship, before she passed. My son and I often times would go over and mow her lawn and trim her trees and help clean her garage.

I still have the lures and tackle box proudly displayed in my outdoors room in my house.

I (ok - my wife) just had a garage sale last week. I have so much older gear I don't use any longer that I thought about dumping, but I just couldn't part with any of it. I can't tell you how many people saw my fishing gear in the back of the garage and tried to make offers. I didn't take a single one...it's kind of like parting with a member of the family! crazy.gif
