I don't own one yet but it would be the shining crown that topped off my ice fishing package! I'll be thinking hard about buying one this fall when I have to figure out how to fit two kids and all my fishing stuff in the toyota I got now! grin.gif I currently own a tacoma and have no complaints so far. 10 years old 120,000. set of tires, set of brakes, and four shocks not to mention that its in immaculate condition!

I think you would be surprised to here the praises of current toyota/import owners.

I also own a Tacoma and someday will probably get a Tundra (when they put the 4.4ltr twin turbo diesel in it)!I've heard nothing but GREAT things about the Tundra from people that either own them or have driven them.I will probably never own any other make of vehicle because I have had very little trouble with Toyota's I have owned for the past 10 years! The mileage, reliability, and resale value are all excellent on Toyota's!The price is a little steep, but you pay for what ya get! wink.gif

Some of those "foreign" cars are made in America, such as the Toyota. I think in my family we own 10 Toyota's, a Nissan Pathfinder(me) and a Mercury. I don't think any of the Toyota's have ever had a problem. I had a Jeep that was in the shop 16 times in the first 40k miles, and usually with more than one problem. No more Jeeps for me!!!!

I don't own a Tundra but a friend of mine does. He loves everything about it except the mileage, he say's it rides great, it's very snappy and it handles great, but he's pretty disappointed in the mileage he get's.

I drive a GMC Yukon XL, but the next truck just might be the Tundra since my kids have grown up and moved out. I have had and still have Toyota's, 1981 pickup, 101,000 actual miles and my son still drives it, 1990 Celica GTS, 280,500 miles and I just got rid of my 1991 4Runner, 350,000 miles. Toyota makes a very reliable product.

Kingfisher,

I own a 2003 Xtra Cab Tundra with the TRD package. Previously i've owned a '95 Tacoma V6 and a '90 tacoma V4, and my wife drives a '98 4-Runner.

I have had great luck with all 3 trucks. The Tundra is great for trailering. I pull a 17' lund prosport/90 honda and then load the truck down with 5 days worth of camping gear when i head up to kabetogama/namakan/rainy with the family (and the Mrs doesnt camp lightly i might add wink.gif

The Tundra gets about 12.5 towing this load up Hwy 53 at @60/65 mph, running empty in winter i get 14.5 and in summer i get 17. Took it out to Glacier park in Montana a couple summers ago and averaged 18.2 for the entire trip of 2800 miles. The acceleration is great, lots of getupandgo. I have been very happy with the truck (yes, would like better gas mileage also, but hey, its an 8 cylinder) Fit and finish is good, and I plan on running this one til it pukes (or i do grin.gif).

I just picked up a 2005 Tundra x-tended cab truck about 6 weeks ago. Defineatly not much room for people in the back seat, but I just plan on having the hound ride back there anyway. I've got about a 17 mpg average going right now, mostly highway. She runs great, but so would any new truck. My third Toyota in a row;86 pick-up then a 2000 Tacoma. No complaints yet. Just had a topper installed today, curious to see how it affects the MPG. Went with the Tundra cause I plan on picking up a boat in the future. I was plenty happy with the Tacoma, just needed a little more power.

The 2005 Toyota Tacoma has 245hp compared to the 190hp in the 1995-2004.Both have 6 cylinder engines, the 2005 has a 4.0 and the other a 3.4ltr.The 2005 Tundra has 285hp if I remember correctly, and the previous year Tundra's had 245hp with the V8.I tow a '99 Lund 1660 Pro V with my 97 Tacoma with no trouble at all. grin.gif

    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
    • Sketti...  not out of a jar either!
    • Lol yeah I watched that
    • I went ahead and watched some of the MLF coverage.  Wheeler didn’t make the cut but the bigger story was the Poche/Avera fallout.   Kinda funny listening to both sides of the story and putting together the scenario, reading between the lines.
