Custom Spiral Wrapped Rod ???'s

Bushwacker

Question

I know there were a few threads about spiral wrapped custom made rods last year. It is time to put in my rod order and I was interested in one. Can these be used effectively for casting and trolling. If they are for casting, does it matter what direction the guides wrap. I am a left-handed caster, so does that make a difference? Thanks for any help you can give. I tried searching for the old thread, but I am not having any luck.

Thanks.

I had a custom rod made with this Roberts Rod Wrap last season. "Rods By Engel" made it for me for big cats. I love it, and will certainly get more made by Rod.

I highly recommend Rod at "Rods by Engel" for such work. He builds them to order and they are a work of highly functional art when he is done.

Rod is Scoots Dad by the way. So Scoot can fill you in on the details if you wish to contact him.

Great rods!

Now I'll have trouble sleeping tonight just thinking about a new rod and open water.

That rod will be the first one to see action in 05 as I usually start the season by trolling cranks shallow.

Back to reality.. 38 below on the gunflint this morning.

I also have a spiral wrap laker ice fishing rod by "Rods by Engel" very sweet rod and concept.

I also have Midwest Rods and Thorne Bros Rods. They are all custom built rods and aside from the premium quality, I am very proud to own them.

I highly recommend Midwest Rods or Thorne Bros and their rods. Very sensitive touch and the actions do everything a person expects them to do.

Im using 2 of Midwests Rods for Lakers this winter and 2 others for Walleye, Crappie and they are the best rods I own. Light and sensitive. My Med/Light is a blast to use. I caught a 9# eelpout with it and it handled it no problem.

Bill is also a stand up guy and backs up everything he makes. Goes out of his way to make sure your happy.

For those of you who have Robert's wraps, do you notice any different in casting differences. I am thinking about putting it on a St. Coix EC70MHF blank and using it for light muskie bucktails and pike fishing.

It's not a new technology at all. The way I understand it is that the guides spiral around the rod so that the guide tip ends up on the bottom like a spinning rod. That way your line is laying in the guide instead of on the pole. The theory is that it increases sensitivity in a casting or trolling rod. In my case I plan to use it mostly for deep water trolling, bottom bouncing, etc. Midwest Rod And Reel has a full explanation on there web site. (really it's just an excuse to by a new rod)

I like it because of the reasons stated above and it smoothy feeds out line when fighting big fish like cats. I see a big diference in how a drag will function too, far smoother on a run with less binding on the rod blank.

I was pleased to see it did not deminish the castability of the rod even with 30# mono spooled up. When I use superbraids like Power Pro it shoots through the guides very smoothly.

I think I will get one made for walleye next. Something like a 7' med/fast action just for vertical jigging on the Red.
