Evinrude running rough

Got my 2 stroke 90s vintage 25 horse winterized last fall and picked it up the other day. Dumped the old fuel, got some fresh non-oxy added oil and some Sea foam. Motor started on the first pull. The second time I used the motor it started great again but ran uneven at full throttle and was hard to start after that 1st start. Was thinking of using some Yamaha no ring is supposed to help carbs. Any other ideas? Does not seem like a spark issue.

Thanks

You said it started fine on the first try, but did you really run it?  I wonder if the unevenness at full throttle came after the winter or after the first run of the year.

Personally I think seafoam is overrated.   All this worry about running non-oxy, then put alcohol in it...  I hear all sorts of conflicting info that seafoam is the best thing ever and that it isn't.  I was putting some in and eventually ran into some throttle problems.  Gaskets/carbs were gummed up.  Mechanic told me it was from the seafoam.  I've been running straight non-oxy for two years now and my 33 year old 75 hp evinrude spins like a top.   Just kicking in 2 cents on seafoam.

I had a 96  25hp Evinrude. While I love my black motors more ;) this was a pretty good motor.

When I was having similar issues, it ended up needing a carb rebuild, and a fuel pump rebuild. I did it myself, and I ain't no mechanic ;) Hardest part was getting the starter off, as one nut is super hard to reach, and can't do it with a wrench. Need to use a chisel and hammer to start nut spinning - someone here gave me that advice (thank you again, I think maybe boatfixer...)

About $20 or so for carb kit, and about $15 or so for the fuel pump kit. The diaphragm in fuel pump was cracked.

Also, take pictures as you take it all off/apart as it will help. I initially put the float back in upside down, so had to take carb off again. After the first time it was so easy I just did it right as it was tied up to a dock (pontoon).

Fuel pump is also very easy easy to do, just sooe very small parts so do it on a nice clean surface and have glasses or a young guy with good eyes in case you drop something ;)

After doing those, it started first turn of key each year for another 4-5 years or so until I sold it a guy on my lake, and it is still running great he says, and I don't think he takes great care of things, but I told him to use non-oy gas exclusively.

Heck, I even taught my Grandkids to say, when they started the motor, "Wow, this things starts just like a Mercury!" ;)

Good luck!

I was going to run more Sea Foam and now I don't know what to think about Sea Foam. I will still do the No ring stuff,

I'm going out Sun morning(brrr) I'll keep you posted. Thanks for all the help. Wish I had a outboard mechanic that I trusted.

Oh just give SeaFoam a try...Try it in one tank and let'er rip! It's not going to ruin anything in just one tank.  SeaFoam saved my lawnmower and snowblower, both of which wouldn't run and ran horrible.

It ran great today but my electric start sounds like it is spinning and not grabbing so I used the pull start-So is fixing that a big job? Fishing was slow this morning so if you are waiting for the water to warm up (was 42) you are not missing anything.

That's the starter drive or Bendix. First, make sure your connections from the batt are all tight and clean, and batt is up to snuff. Any of those that are not can fail to engage the drive. As mentioned, clean and lube the drive post. Old grease will gum up and collect dirt in there. Use something like CRC cleaner to spray down in and on shaft to clean it thoroughly out. WD40 will work in a pinch. Then dry it with a rag, and put a  very light coating of silicone or PTFE type light grease on it. If the Bendix isn't going out, that should take care of it.
