Bear Head State Park/Food

Recommended Posts

Ok so I put food in there out of respect for the subject matter of this forum.  AND food is the end result also.  So RH, I know you go there often it seems.  My wife and I have wondered what the campsites are like there and is there room to set up grills etc.  Does each page have a picnic table?  Is there enough room so I wouldn't have to get stuck too close to any of our brethren on here but close enough to have a fun cookout?  This should be on the camping page too.  Can we duplicate this and put there too if needed Rebs?  Is it usually full or is it so big that there are always open sites.  I have  a 26" camper which means 29' total with the hitch.  AND no nudity please!  :D

I meant page not page.

page not page

why cant I write s i t e ?

Wondering about RH's Bear Head State Park.  I know it is a camping thing and a cooking thing.  Just wondered if I should have put it on the camping page instead.  Thanks

I guess I was actually wondering if anyone would be interested in a cookout/camp out there?

I'm busy with the grandkids right now but I will fill you in on that place.  Yes you can bring that camper there and I can tell you of a spot where you will get all the walleye's you want.  Great place to go.  This year we are going to our friends resort up at Ash River so it doesn't look like we will make it there this year.  I just love that place.  I would suggest to go to the electric page's with that camper of course.  Great showers, and I know your wife will like that especially.  Best time for fishing is the month of June.  Let me know if you want any information on that park.  I have gone there for many years, and will return.  good luck.

The only time that I camped there was in the winter with a buddies brand new truck camper. Not a lot of company around us then and a little harder to get the layout of the campground with all the snow. There are a few small Trout lakes there and we snow shoed into them and did pretty well on one of them. And yes it is up by Ely.

http://files.dnr.state.mn.us/maps/state_parks/spk00109_camp.pdf    Thanks Jim.  The first time I have pasted a link.  I am catching on.  I am excited to go here.  I get more time off than the wife since she started at a new postion last year and starts all over with accrueing vacation time.  Sucks.

It's between Tower and Ely.  Camped there for 15 years straight.  It's harder for my mother-in-law now to tent so I've been going to a resort owned by friends of ours up at Ash River.  Little harder for her to get around at 90 but she's a trooper.  Yes you can fish from shore by the beach area toward dusk.  The eye's come in there near dark.  You can also rent canoe's and boats there.  They have elecric motors there also.  Good panfishing and some nice bass and pike.  If you look at my page in the Where To Go page you will see some of what we have done there.  There are even liitle docks there to tie your boat to overnight.  When you decide to go let me know and I can give you details on where to fish for the species so you can cut down on your search time.  There are two trout lakes in the park.  Both stocked with brook trout now.  Need a trout stamp for those.  Easy shore fishing there.  good luck.

I've fished the Arrowhead region most of my life and still do.  Will until my ashes are spread there.  Best time to fish that lake is anytime but we always went in June.  Last two weeks in June.   And yes there is some privacy between sites.  Never had a problem with noise or anything.  Great family park.  I was told by the rangers that 70% of the people that go there go for nature watching, hiking ect. instead of fishing.   There is a 10 MPH speed limit on the lake.  So there is no racing around or anything also.   good luck.

Ok we are in.  Could only find Thursday and Friday night openings that fit our rig size.  That is ok too.  We can check things out and make a reservation a year in advance I think so we can go back next year.  Looks fun to us.  I want to catch some of those brook trout.  Thanks reiny!

There are some other attractive campgrounds in the area, especially if you have a boat of some sort.  Fall lake outside Ely, and the two on Vermilion, McKinley Park (or maybe even the new lake vermilion state park, don't know what is open there) or hoodoo point.  Probably others, especially if sort of primitive is ok with you.   Wakemup campground, fenske lake,

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
