Good Morning!

Died at birth rather than a few months later.....

My mother's brother had the "home place" in Wisconsin, up on the far side of Ladysmith.  Like 30 dairy cows.  Some chickens and goats and a big garden until buying chicken and eggs and vegetables got cheaper than raising your own.  Goats were for milk.

We went up there a couple of times a year.  Summer to help with hay, and fall for butchering.

Chores took awhile.  Barn Cleaning, milking cows and goats etc.

Not the most prosperous farming area.

you guessed it, lamb was on sale today at the grocery store and there were some chops getting close to the "buy date" and those were reduced even more.  I looked...I pondered...I thought about yesterday and walked away with no lamb.

The poor little critters are stuck in my head now.  I guess I'm too nice.  At least I didn't spare the cows and pigs though. Almost bought some fish but I thought I saw some guy that looked like Bobby Bass hiding behind a display case that was trying to take a picture of me on his phone buying fish.

Well, I'm up, and the sun isn't. NYAAA. I really have no idea why. Still used to six hours of sleep, I guess. The Temp-o-matic says it's 32.4* F outside. Must be cloudy, 'cause I can't see any stars. Today's get some groceries day, aka "look at the funny people in the store" day. I can't use the store name, or Smurfy will have a blue hissy fit. But it's the cheapest place I can get my name brand stuff, so I am forced to go there, unless I wanna back Mr. Sparkles up to COSTCO doors and load on gigantic proportions for me. They need a store that just sells down-sized one-person items. I can't find spaghetti sauce there in the small jars, have to buy the big one and freeze half of what's not used. Meat and such is OK; I just break up the packs, rewrap, and freeze it. I haven't bought laundry soap in over two years, store had a blow-out on a nat brand, "regular" size jug, for $2 each, all flavors. I bought five. Down to my last two. Same with coffee, last Fall Folger's was on sale somewhere for $5.88 for 3 lbs, I bought six. Two left. Gotta stretch those dollars! Looks like fake scrambled eggs and snausages for breakfast, toast with punkie butter. I'm hooked on Trader Joe's Pumpkin Butter, if you haven't tried it, I suggest this Fall you do. Only sold in the Fall. Fantastic stuff, if you like pumpkin. I love pumpkin anything and everything. Uh oh..there goes the crows cawing....cawing in CAWchester, city of falsehoods. I can see it's all cloudy. Time for cup of cawfee #2. Have a good day guys........

It's mostly sunny here and I can tell because I could use a Smurfy welder's mask when I walk in the kitchen and the sun is right in my eyes.  The sun has a great way to show any dust or grime on any thing at this angle.

Last night I found I had a fault.  Wife was eating a cup of ice cream in bed playing some phone game and the knife eater dog was laying next to her snoring.  I asked her why the dog wasn't begging for ice cream.  She didn't answer since she must have been working on a career high.

I went down and got some ice cream and went upstairs and the knife eater sat in front of me blocking my view to the tv mooching for licking the bowl at the end, a habit I started a few months ago letting her do.  That's a little lesson in dog training for those that are new to the game and for those of us that need some remedial training.

Slept until 7:00am today! Sure felt great to get 6 hrs of sleep for once!

I may try to get out on Vermilion today to see if the slush from all of the rain that we got the last couple days has dried up some. Sure put a stop to my great crappie bite, (can't get to them).:(

Hope to get at least a few more days in catching those slabs!

Good to see you chiming in Cliff.  Word of caution if you haven't been on the quasi cooking section much.  Some of these guys have real short attention spans.  It gets worse as the week wears on...  Reb, Smurf, and Boar are the biggest offenders.  They are the kids your parents never wanted you hanging out with, once I even derailed a thread from reading their stuff too much.

Finally. Ditched the office pest although he had his nose stuck squarely in my wild rice reply first. Man, to have that much free time on one's hands. I'm sure his CHORES weren't done yet. One demerit.

Lambing season is off to a shaky early start. When I started CHORES this a.m. we had one ewe with a water bag starting to show. I needed to head to town so Mrs. Cheviot checked in on her before she left. Nothing yet. Will head out before lunch to see what kind of progress is being made. Sometimes leaving them alone and letting nature take it's course works the best. It's not like a tube of toothpaste where if you squeeze it, stuff will pop out. Always possible I'll need to get out the OB sleeves, etc., to fish around and see what is going on in there. Can work up an appetite doing that by yourself. Luckily there's a lot of rice left over! ;)

Still a few portables on St. Olaf Lake when I went by. Also a big dead raccoon on the road. Then as I got closer to town there was a big skunk running down the road. He made a right turn onto the side road or it would've been tempting to flatten him. The truck sleeps outside so if it stinks like a skunk for a few days, no biggy. I am not a skunk/possum/raccoon fan. With this recent warm up, appears I'd best keep my trusty blunderbuss at the ready.

now would be a good time to tell you that about 4 years ago a raccoon fell on my head one night.  We were in So Dak coon hunting and the kid I was with smoked a coon as we stood under a huge cottonwood tree.  He said, "look out!!!" and I ducked and it flattened me.  Landed on my head/neck area and it knocked  me down.  I had blood all over form the coon and my neck hurt for a few days.  Luckily the coon was dead before it hit me so I didn't have to scream like a girl or anything.  I don't know what a coon even weighs but I'm guessing this one was 15 pounds or so and from 30 feet up or so Del can do the math on the force of that bugger.  It may explain some things...

Well I made it out to my crappie spot!

It is usually a 12 mile drive on the ice to get there but the ice road that runs close to my spot was in terrible shape! Fought slush, water, and a double layer of ice for about 6 miles out and gave up before I got stuck.

Took another route that was 25 miles to get there but made it!

Here are the results of about 1 hour of fishing.

Used plastics exclusively. Did not even bring live bait along.

Used Trigger X Mustache Worm on the 1/16oz. pink jig and a Impulse 1" Mini Smelt on the Hali Jig.

Love crappies deep fried in corn oil after rolling them in crushed corn flakes!

between you and me Smurfy...don't tell anyone.  Most of the time I don't even know what the title of the thread is when I post on the "cooking" forum.  This whole thing is just a big game of Post Office or whatever that game is called.

LL, did you know that racoons are known for that? Bet ya weren't aware that Daniel Boon's cap was a LIVE raccoon; just took him awhile to figger it out. Hear he always wondered why his head itched and he had a sore neck. He and Mingo musta been too busy whackin' back the firewater. ;)

since Del is gone I went and found a calculator and found out the peril I was really in.  The calculator was in metric so I had to go out to my truck and look at the speedometer to do the conversions.  The coon was going in excess of 32 or 320 mph when it hit me, which one depends on how well I converted things.  I'm going with 32 since 320 mph sounds a bit fast to me.  The "jules" force it hit me with is something I don't understand but I assume that means how much something hurts when it hits you or the noise it makes when it hits you.  It hurt a moderate amount and made a "Thump!"  sound and made me dizzy for a few moments.  I think neither Dustin or my son laughed for at least ten seconds once I got off of the ground.  They were that worried.

When I did the math I came out with 736 jules, but to get a more accurate number we have to know if the coon impaled ur head stuck to it or bounced off and if so how high did it bounce to get the correct force,  it's been a looooong time since I've used physics, calculus or any advanced math. It also took about 1.36 seconds to fall

Here's the coon. Boys look overly happy it landed on my neck and hit me so square it just sat there for a split second until I fell down.  I think it was so big it kind of had me pinned

If you guys are gonna talk all technical and stuff, I can't just watch while you misuse units. Joules are energy units, Newtons are force units.

Anyway, a really simple way to do it: Let's say the coon did, in fact, fall from 30', and you "broke" his fall 5' above ground (your approx. shoulder height). So he free-fell for 25'. Here's where you make the big assumption - in what distance did his velocity go from maximum to zero? I.e., how far did he squish down on you and push your shoulder down before (pretty much) stopping? Let's say your shoulder displaced a half a foot (and then you also fell a short moment later).

He free-fell 25 ft, and decelerated in 0.5 ft. His deceleration distance was 1/50th his acceleration (free-fall) distance (25 / 0.5 = 50). The deceleration force was thus 50 times greater than his weight, so about 750 lb. This is an over-estimation.

Say that at the instant he hit your shoulder, you started falling - fast, at first, as fast as he was going (40 ft/sec), but slowed before landing on the ground with him on top of you. So now his deceleration distance was 5 ft, or one-fifth of his free-fall distance, so the force impacting you was 5 times greater than his weight, or 75 lb. This is an under-estimation, since he didn't really decelerate linearly from the moment he hit your shoulder to the moment the pair of you hit the ground.

So the answer is somewhere in between. 75 LB < Racoon Striking Force < 750 LB.

How's that for "accurate"? Ha
