I would have to go with the scum frog. I have tried the Zura Spook (sp) but no luck yet. Has anyone tried the soft bodied weedless spook? I don't know who makes it but I bought one a long time ago and havn't tried it out yet. Might have to try it out tonight.

Granny,
That softbody spook thingy is a great bait. You can still do walk the dog, it's weighted in the back so the nose is out of the water, which helps getting up and over junk, and you can cast them a country mile. Caught a 16" bass on that yesterday. But my all time best would have to be the Heddon Torpedo in Frog green.

Mr Special - how do you work your hed. torpedo? I like them but don't really have much luck with them. I usually cast them out, jerk them to make a splash/commotion and pause, jerk, pause. Sometimes I just do a slow steady retreive but haven't had much luck on either presentation. Am I doing anything wrong?

For topwater, I love the zara spooks, little rebel pop-r's, and scum frogs! oh and wait, BUZZBAITS...my favorite!

BigMike,
That's exactly the way I work it. I try to make that back blade spin a little. You could also try feathered back hook too, they seem to help.
But yes the ScumFrogs is a must for thick cover and walkin type lures for open water.
One of these days I will catch a fish on a buzzbait and hopefully a crank bait also.

Buzzbaits are awesome for bassin'! Bass are great hunters when it comes to topwater stuff and buzzbaits seem to really get the active fish! On a day when action is pretty good, try a buzzbait for about 45min-1hr through reeds, across a weed flat, point, between docks, etc... and you'll for sure get a few bass. Buzzbaits in my opinion have one of the best hooking ratios of any topwater. With the walk the dog baits and even scumfrogs, many fish will bump it to stun the lure and maybe come back for it, with a buzzbait, they smash it on the first strike everytime. I think the only other consistant topwater bait for smash hits is a scumfrog or popper, but even then, I've had several just bump and swirl.

Zara Spook, hands down best top water lure. smallmouth, large mouth, pike and muskies love em. Plus they are durable as heck bounce em off rocks pull in logs with em you name it. Fun to watch the Pike jump 3 feet out of the water behind em too.

I have good luck with frogs and "walkers" like the zara spook. My favorite, though, is probably the good old fashioned Hula Popper. Just seems like they get SMACKED like no other lure for me.

My all time fav, though, was an old Heddon wooden mouse. You could pop them a little, and they had a swimming motion when retreived slowly. First lure I ever fished bass with. Lost my only remaining one on a break off last year.

My favorite of all time was the powerbait popper. They don't make them anymore and the hooks ripped out of my last one. Now I use a skitterpop or a Northland buzzbait.
You definately can't beat the topwater bite for bass, or northerns, or muskies...or whatever hits it.

Hey sqeedunk, are you talking about the berkley popper that was half hard bait and half soft power bait body? If so I may be able to hook you up with some. I have a friend who bought a ton of the old berkley stuff from the plant in Iowa. He has an entire garage full and has sales a couple times a year. His stock has been dwindling but I'm pretty sure he still has those poppers.

Hey Bassin, that would be great if you could get me some of those! A lot of my friends would want some too so I could buy a bunch if there are any left. I have looked in tons of bargain bins for them since I found my last one there but no luck. I live in the north metro area and am willing to drive a ways or pay the postage. Thanks a bunch, let me know if you find anything out.

And guess who got fishyje into topwater fishing? THATS RIGHT!! Young Jedi has grown into a pro at topwater fishing. Its hard to beat my Zara Spook Jr. Its the go-to-bait for me. And my Excalibur Bill Dance spittin image. (bill dance speaks to me in my dreams and tells me when to use it). and Yup, buzzbaits. Usually their strike to hook ration is pretty high. Hardly miss a fish on them.

i love topwaters! i have had great success with Nip-I-Dee-Dee's, buzz baits, Pop-R's, Zara Spooks and Scum Frogs. i just can't pick only one.

i could fish topwaters all day if i knew the bass would hit 'em.

Smithwick Devil Horse for open water(but replace the trebles) and a white scum frog over the pads. Heddon tiny torpedo for smallies in the river. Buzz baits work good but they are so noisy, especially on a glassy calm backwoods lake. There I go dreaming again.

Squeedunk-

My buddy wasnt sure how many of those poppers he had but he knows he has some, he thought 15 or so. Some in Blue/black, silver/black and chart heads. And about 5 different colors of bodies. He has tons of the bodies. He was selling tem for 50 cents (1 head with 2 bodies). I'm sure he would give them all for a cheaper price. Let me know how to get a hold of you.
