Finesse jig setup?

Don't really use finesse jigs that light but throw a lot of jig worms that weight. I use a 7'1" Medium X-Fast NRX spinning rod with 15-20lb super slick. I will usually will use a 10-12 lb fluro leader (10 ft) as well.

For exposed-hook stuff like jigworms with jigheads from 3/32 oz to 3/16 oz or so, I use a 6'10" med power x-fast spinning rod with 8# Sunline Sniper fluoro.

For finesse jigs with weedguards, I use a 7' med-heavy power fast action baitcasting rod with either 10 or 12# fluoro (I forget which I have on there at the moment).

I've tried using braid for jigworms, etc., numerous times, and keep going back to fluoro. Just prefer it for a variety of reasons.

I like a 7' graphite medium-heavy, fast action spinning rod, with 12-17lb flouro. That setup seems to give me the best response.

The flouro sinks, so I'm in the strike-zone quicker, and the lack of both bouyancy and elasticity in flouro means that as long as I'm keeping some amount of tension on the line, I'm feeling anything and everything that touches the bait.

Any energy at the lure is transferred to the tip of a quality med-heav graphite rod, and in turn that energy is easily transferred down the blank to your hand. Since I started using this setup, I'm much more easily able to discern fish vs any other lure contact. My hookup percentages have gone up as a result.

Here's my rule for rod selection on any kind of "feel" fishing like finesse jig, worm, etc: Have a friend place the rod-tip on his voicebox and hum low while you lightly hold the grip. If you can feel his voice in your hand, you're barking up the right tree.

Use finesse jigs quite a bit. If its a regular wire I will throw it on my 7-3 MH rod with 15-17# line. If its a lite wire, I will use a 7' Medium with 12-14# line.

I have thrown it in open water on spinning gear, but I am not as concerned about the line or rod as I am just the slower fall and more compact look

Yeah, that'll catch 'em. smile

I'm probably in the minority but I like wire weedguards like that on light jigs. I use Lunker City football heads that have a really good light wire hook and a V-shaped cable weedguard. With light jigs all the weedguard has to do is tip the thing sideways to clear a weed, and I think I get better hookups with a wire guard vs. a fiber guard on lighter line and a long cast.

If I was a bass, I would eat it!

So I have a dumb question, Why are finesse jig shirts tied so the strands go over the jig head like that. Guess compared to a regular jig where they are all behind the head. Maybe it is just allowing you to have less strands on the jig?

I've been throwing a 1/4 Title Shot jig head with a 3.5 inch beaver, not exactly a finesse jig, but a finesse/downsized approach from the typical J'n'P or the 4.25 inch beavers or chigger craws. I use a 7' M St Croix Legend with a Scoprion MG and 12# fluoro.

It's been very good to me the the last 2-3 weeks, both largemouth and smallies.

The short strands kind of act as a parachute to slow down the drop speed a little too. Kind of helps when you have a jighead that's a little heavier so it's easier to pitch accurately but still drops slow.
