Party Hunting

If I fill my tag with rifle can I still archery party hunt with another hunter with a Valid archery tag

Yep. You would be good to go if you filled your tag that came with your rifle license and had purchased an archery license.

Everyone in the party will need the proper license, and at least one person needs a tag that can be filled. You will have an archery tag with your archery license, but the tag will be no good to anyone as you are already at your 1 deer limit.

Assuming you are hunting in a 1 deer area.

tomguy, are you trying to hunt without buying two tags? You asked nearly the same question twice.

The point is you can hunt with the weapon that you have a license to hunt with. If you have a rifle tag and you fill it, you can continue to rifle hunt with your party during rifle season.

If you want to archery hunt then you need an archery tag.

If filling it with a buck, go ahead.

If you and your daughter are hunting in a hunters choice area, go right ahead.

If you and your daughter are hunting in a lottery area and she put in for a doe permit and received it, go right ahead.

If you and your daughter are hunting in a lottery area and she can only shoot a doe because all youths can in lottery areas then you cannot fill that tag.

nevermind, we are talking archery.

Yes you can.

It depends on the area you fill your rifle tag in. And if you fill your archery tag before gun season your personal gun tag is no good anyway. There are 3 Managed areas this year where you can take up to 2 deer, and there are only 3 areas that are Intensive Harvest (up to 5 deer). The rest are either Bucks Only, Lottery, or Choice and they all are One and Done this year. For example, I bought archery and rifle tags, and applied for a doe permit. But I still only get 1 deer this year, regardless of where I hunt. You cannot party hunt with an archery tag at all unless there is more than one archer. So the only way I could continue to hunt after I take my one deer is to party gun hunt and fill someone else's tag.

From the Regs:

A “party” is defined as any group of two or more licensed deer hunters who

are all afield; hunting together at the same time; AND all using firearms

(including muzzleloaders) or all using archery.

• A mixed group of firearms and archery hunters is considered two separate

parties.

• Any member of a party meeting this definition may kill a deer for any other

member of the party who has an unused tag valid for that deer.

Important!

The intent of the party hunting regulation is to prevent parties from

shooting more deer than the available number of tags. The party hunting

regulation requires that all hunters who intend to tag deer for each other

be hunting together, in the field, at the time the deer are taken. Party

members who are not afield hunting with the individual who takes a deer

at the time it is taken may not legally tag that deer. Hunters may not lend

licenses to or borrow licenses from other hunters.

So if you are party hunting you can't shoot a deer with your bow and let someone with a gun license tag it.

I verified this with the DNR, so you should read the regulations carefully.

So I've decided to try for a buck with archery prior to deer season, if I don't get one, then I can try for either a buck or doe during gun (I got a doe permit), and if I still get skunked, I can continue to try for either sex with archery after gun season is over, but as soon as I shoot a deer my seasons are over. Sux cuz my "party" is over now that my dad has passed away. I hunt alone. Takes something away from the experience, but I know he's watching.

This goes back to what I said in the first reply,

if you are hunting with archery and your buddy is hunting with a rifle, you are NOT party hunting, you are simply each hunting on your respective license.

In the regs, party hunting is a term used for legal purposes, not as a term to define the group of people you hunt with.

Okay, what if you party hunt as archers, one of you gets a deer during archery season. niether has purchased a firearm lisc. yet. Can they both still buy a firearms lisc and hunt the firearms season together as a party hunt? Even though one has already a registered deer. This is an archery to firearms season party hunt question. Or will the dnr site pop up when you go to buy a lisc that, you have already registered a deer. thx

notnuftime,

I'm going to try and clarify your question before I answer.

You are saying, two guys have archery licenses and they hunt together. One of them shoots a deer and tags it with the archery tag. Can they still buy firearms licenses and hunt together?

There is nothing in the DNR system that prevents you from buying a license. However, unless you are in a 2 deer zone or metro, the person who tagged a deer with archery tag CANNOT tag a deer with his firearms tag. If you're willing to spend the $31 to tag a deer for your buddy, then go ahead. Just know that you cannot tag another deer in your own name unless you are using a bonus permit in the right zones.

It is up to you to know how many deer you can shoot and the regulations. All of these answers are plainly explained in the regulations.
