Wow, 80lb on a 14'?

I have a 70lb on an 18' boat and it enough for me. 80 would have been nice but not really necessary.

I guess it depends on how you are using it. I hit the MS river in the summer but rarely use it to try to hold a spot.

If 28lbs worked for him in the past, a 35lb model would be a nice upgrade.

Obviously a different story on a river, but on a lake, you don't need that much. More power just more money, and in the case of 24 volt motors, take two batteries. A 35# is plenty for a 14' on a lake. I have a 40# on my lighter 16' and I never wished I had more power.

I would go with the biggest 12 volt trolling motor I could afford. Once you get over that 55 lb thrust mark then you need two batteries for the 24 volt system which you take up too much room in a 14 footer for my liking, not mention adding another 60 lbs of weight with the additional battery but to each their own.

I agree get the biggest 12 volt (55#).We have a 55# powerdrive on both our boats. One is Dad's Alumacraft Classic(16.5') & the other is a Crestliner 1750 Fish Hawk which does have a 70#/24volt on the transom but it's rarely used. Both of ours are reconditioned, saved $100+,& have been problem free. The big C store has them occassionally but a better selection at The Bobber Shop which is right down the street from Minnkota in Mankato.

I would think you'd be fine with a 55. Any bigger and you'll need two batteries and space can be a premium in a 14 footer. I have a 55 on my rebel and have no problems with power. I turned the head around and mounted it on the bow. If that is something you might do, make sure you get the longest shaft possible so it stays in the water in the bigger waves. Also, the closer you can get it to the bow, the better your control will be. As far as brands, there is an authorized servicer for MinnKota in Detroit Lakes.
