filter on fridge ice maker

The fridge has an internal filter and it's showing that it's time to replace it. Part is $45 on Amazon. I have an in-line filter as well but I can't find the replacement cartridges for it any more. Any thoughts on whether you even need to worry about this if you have city water? I mean I drink the stuff without a filter so it can't be that bad.

We just bought a new fridge,Thats new to me,A in fridge filter? What you got?

I use the inline filter because of well water and the minerals it contains.Without it the cubes look cloudy and colored.Or they get off colored and I know to change out the inline filter, Manganese I believe to be the culprit. With it or without we still get ice cubes. The old one and new one 2 weeks old seem the same.

In the instructions does it mention its needed and change out time?Have you looked up the brand and model and read about a secondary filter .Does it call for a inline filter?Questions questions I never heard of a internal filter?

I have a newer fridge, with the filter between the crisper baskets. It is 60 bucks wherever i look. The light has been on for a bit now but water tastes fine. We do not make ice out of it so that is not a concern I think the price is normal for the style.

We had an in line filter in the water line going to our old fridge. We then bought a new LG refrigerator about 6 years ago with a filter in the fridge. I think our filter light in the new fridge comes on after 6 months. I just don't believe that it needs a filter that often, so I have been going for about 2 years between filters on the fridge. I change the other in line filter every 2 years too because it serves a different filter in addition to our LG fridge.

I honestly question how important all these filters are, but it's far easier to change the filters than "discuss" it with the wife! I get all my filters online from Filters Fast.

It won't hurt you, but if you leave the filter, over time the water flow will slow and eventually stop. Depending on how contaminated your water is will determine how long your filter will last.

Does the fridge have a bypass so you can remove the filter and not have to even worry about it?

If not, I would install a new, less expensive, inline filter and change that regularly. Doing so will greatly lengthen the lifespan of the expensive fridge filter, which I would replace whenever you notice a reduced flow, or maybe atleast once a year since who knows what could possibly be growing inside that thing...

I would recommend getting a reverse osmosis unit and then removing the fridge filter and installing the bypass plug that is supplied with them. The factory filters don't do that great of a job and in the long run the RO will give better water for about the same cost.It is preferable to have a carbon filter on there to improve taste.

If your water pressure is low buy one with a permeate pump to boost the water pressure as some refrigerators won't work well with the RO running only on the incoming pressure. If you get a good one your ice cubes will be crystal clear.

we have Frigidaire gallery series, if u have ice maker or water in door, yes you will have water filter in fridge. ours runs on a per gallon basis so the more it is used (summer) then the more frequent the filter needs to be changed. we have had it since '05 and only changed filters maybe 3-4 times. I have taken black sharpie and write dates on them (just like furnace filter) so when the change filter light goes on, I can easily see how long it lasted, currently aveage 12-18 months, & ours is $30/ea or 2 pack for $50 @ local store.

I bought an in-line filter today and found that the new ones only require that you push the plastic line into a snap in fitting at the ends of the cartridge. Easy to do and much less than the unit inside the fridge itself.

Thanks the the tips.

I have an inline and the one inside the fridge. I change the inlkine once a year and the one inside the fridge, once every 2 years at $60 for that filter.

My cubes are crystal clear so I stay on this program.

City water for me so it is not as bad as whn I lived in the country with our well water.
