Why is auto registration date fixed rather than 1 year from date of purchase?

Recommended Posts

What's the logic behind having registration renewal date fixed vs. renewal for 1 year relative to the date you actually bought it?

For example, one of my cars is July and I didn't renew it last year. So if I want to drive it now, more or less I have to buy two years of registration. A full year now and another full year in July/August.

Why isn't it that I go buy it now, pay for the year, then it's due again next April?

I see an awful lot of cars that come thought the shop with expired tabs. The state doesn't know whether or not the vehicle has been driven so you pay as though it was driven not parked.

If they did it your way what would stop people from taking a chance and only buying tabs every other year?

Guess I'm not understanding where you're going with that. Either way, your tabs are expired or they are not. Either way, If they are expired and you drive then you run the risk of getting busted for it.

If I could have renewed my tabs today for the 12 months I'd have done it on the spot. The current policy almost seems like incentive to take a risk for three months rather than pay a whole year for three months.

I'm still not following. You seem to be saying that even if I wait until August I still have to pay for 2013-2014 AND 2014-2015? I don't believe that's the case.

I understand if I wanted to renew tabs on July 31st I'd still have to pay for the July 2013 - July 2014 period. But, come August 1st 2014, I don't have to pay for July 2013 - July 2014 too, only July 2014 - July 2015.

I have no problem paying for 12 months of registration, although 6 months would suit me much better for this car (stored roughly 1/2 the year). Just that the registration period should start in the month of actual purchase, not some silly fixed calendar schedule based on when I bought the car 20 years ago.

Insurance and license plates seem to be the 1st thing people don't buy when the going gets tough. I've seen plates with all sorts of stickers attached (including S&H green stamps, remember those??)to give the impression that the registration is up to date. Not a good thing when they get caught!!!

So your 20 year old car is worth what, $1000? According to the MN tax rules "the tax shall be $10 plus an additional tax equal to 1.25 percent of the base value".

Wish my tabs were only $25...

The registration goes with the car, not with the owner. When purchased new you pay for 12 months, then pay again for another 12 months and so forth. If you buy the car used in April and tabs are due in July then you pay for that year. You didn't have to pay registration when you bought it you pay when it's due. Not really a complicated topic. If you have a problem paying it then move somewhere where you don't have to. Oh wait, such a place doesn't exist or you'd hate life even worse if you found such a place.

Minnesota, land of over 10,000 complainers.

If you skip a year you'll have to pay for it, you're not getting around that.

Maybe the law has changed, but I have skipped a year in the past and not had to pay it. When I did finally get new tabs I got a new month sticker, too. Don't remember if there were extra charges, but don't recall any.

Absolutely correct. This isn't back taxes where you're on the hook for previous years you didn't register. You do, however, have to pay for a full year, regardless if you pay the first day of the registration year or the very last day of the registration year.

And, that's the point. The current system is just flat out dumb. If I want to buy tabs today then I should have registration for 1 year from today not, as I said earlier, based on the date I first registered the car 20 years ago.

so it should be done YOUR way just to save you couple bucks, kinda like fishing license idea? gov't runs on strict calendars years with thousands of residents data & multiple licenses of a single resident just to name 1 piece of data. you pay taxes EVERYWHERE, it just depends on where you are what they call it. if you don't like to pay the extra pennies, go to a country where you wont even have the chance to earn or use them. we pay for freedom & privilege and I love it

License plates/tabs are not done on calendar years(1/1-12/31). They can start/end any month of the year.

One of the nice things about this country is that we have a right to disagree with things the gubment does and voice our opinion about it. And I don't think this particular issue is going to cause anyone to move to another country. That's a bit dramatic.

I now have collector registration on the vehicle. No more buying tabs, ever, on that one. And, yes, I completely familiarized myself with the ins and outs of collector registration and my use is compliant of the law.

So, why post here and not in in Sillytown. whistle
