Who thinks the ice will be out before opener? (North of Metro)

iced over

I moved up to LOTW in 2007 and have seen it iced up yet on opener 3 times since then. Will be interesting to see what happens this year. A big rain can change things in a hurry.

I'm betting ice will still be floating around on LOTW this opener but the bay and river will be open.

The ice will be off around our local lakes by opener. The forecast looks toasty. It cools off Sun, Mon, and Tues. but that's due to rain then nice again.

I do think the walleyes will be in that post spawn funk on opener, though

Last year confused the heck out of the pike. Usually they start spawning just before the ice comes off, and finish up a few weeks after. Last year with the random hot days, cold days, and rain/snow they didn't know what to do! On opener I heard guys got lots of 1-2 pound pike in 2'-3' of water while after crappie. I was looking for bigger fish, and couldn't find them. I had more follows than ever that day. They would follow a lure to the boat, I would do kind of a musky figure 8 and they would just follow it around. I tried all kinds of baits. The two I got were on medium size spoon, and probably just dumb luck. Man what a cold, windy day. It wasn't until about 3 weeks later (well into the monsoon season we had) that I even started really getting more than the occasional fish. It did make for a fun late summer fishing though. Seems like that's when the big fish came out to play.

Mississippi river ice in Little Falls with completely out today. It normally goes out between April 10-14, so things at first glance seems pretty normal at this time. I would bet lakes will open in few weeks around here.
