minky
Which is a better survival tool an 8 inch hunting knife or a good hand ax?
nofishfisherman
Knife. Far more uses and allows for more precise work than an ax.
minky
In the right hands would a hand ax be just as versiable and more durable?
Archerysniper
I would take a good survival ax over a 8" knife any day. You have way more durability and uses for it.
nofishfisherman
A good sturdy knife is pretty dang versatile. I think in the right hands either tool can be very versatile but I see the knife as being the superior tool for the greatest amount of jobs. fishuhalik
Knife, hands down. You can do just about anything with a good, sharp knife.
minky
I used to think that too until I started to pack a compact Gerber ax.Boy that thing comes in handy a lot!
Gordie
In the right hands would a hand ax be just as versiable and more durable? The phrase that pays "in the right hands" in the average Joes hands he could end up missing a few fingers worse a thumb. Had a scout instructor almost chop his thumb off at scout camp many years ago and he was skilled at least he said he was I would take the knife myself in a survival situation. nofishfisherman
I used to think that too until I started to pack a compact Gerber ax.Boy that thing comes in handy a lot! I carry a similar ax either on my belt or in a pack when I am hunting, hiking, or camping. However, I also carry a good sturdy knife. If I had to pick one or the other I'm reaching for the knife. There are a few things the ax does better but there is almost nothing the knife can't do.I suppose in the end the best tool for your survival is the one you feel most comfortable with. If you feel the ax is your best chance at survival then that is the right tool for you. For others the knife might be the best tool, and that's the camp I fall into. Duffman
Knife. But if you want the best of both worlds go with a tactical tomahawk.
minky
Or just carry both! That is kinda where I am now.I will always carry a knife but with the ax along some jobs like splitting a deer's pelvic bone is much easier.I also keep in my pack a folding saw that will cut wood and bone equally well. jentz
If I could pick and choose in a survival instance I'd take both and more!! But If it is a survival instance,I would suppose your stuck with what you got??RIGHT? My pocket knife would be with me.Cause a choice wouldnt be in the stars.Camping, hiking carry both with a compact saw.be prepared thats it.Getting shelter, water and fire is the # one.Matches/lighter a tarp are for those who are prepared but you can only carry so much.so just a knife or axe is dreaming and really nothing in comparison to shelter.fire an water. nofishfisherman
Good post, the better prepared a person is, the easier it will be to survive. Or perhaps the better prepared a person is the lower his chances are of finding himself in a survival situation in the first place.

minky
I guess then if a person really thinks about it, the mind is the best survival tool.Using what you have is more important then what you don't!
