Well spearing 2013/2014 is over with. What are some of you guys high points for the year?

I had a great time at both gtg's, the bow event and all of the second sunday events. I believe I speared every weekend from the first weekend in December until the close today. A few of us get together and speared every sunday. We grilled lots of brats and drank our share of beverages. I'm wondering what the heck I'm going to do every sunday until winter is over???

I was thinking about this season and realized that spearing has become a great social event for me. I have made some very good life long friends because of this sport.

I'm already looking forward to the Winnie gtg on Dec. 5. Hope to see some new guys up there as well as all the regulars.

This year has been my best year so far, saw more fish then any other year saw bigger fish, and let a lot more fish go including a couple that would have been pb fish. I was also happy to try more metro lakes this year then years past. If it was for the cold and snow I probably would have made a couple more trips toward the end of the season.

I got to thinking about it today while I was working on decoys, hard to believe its over for the season.

It seems like yesterday we were all talking about how much fun we were going to have here:

Freezing our tails off at the GTG on Winni!!! My goodness it was cold that weekend!!!

I fished (8) different lakes this season many for the first time. I destroyed my fish house the first weekend of the season. Purchased 2 more. Ran 2 sets of auger blades into the bottom, mashing them both. I sold a few decoys along the way, traded some, gave some away, and others were added to the rotation. I made both GTG's this year as well as the 2nd Sunday events the East Central MDAA puts on. I even managed to get on the lake when I was on-call which is the definition of going to far.

I lost count of the number of miles traveled, killed (6) GIANT decoy suckers (SF Bait had some toads) Saw a bunch of fish of all species and had more fun than a person should be allowed to have.

Some highlights:

Goose sight fishing sunfish was awesome. She got to get out a few times this year as well and had a great time. We never speared anything, but she got to see a ton of fish, including some nice ones.

Dorkfish getting second place at spearfest.

In the end I harvested 6 fish for the table this year. I think the count was well over 100 fish decoyed.

I'm not sure what I will do with my weekends now. I enjoyed getting together every weekend or stopping in and chatting a few minutes in the shacks. Like MJ said, there seems to be a social aspect to this very solitary sport that I will miss.

Keep in touch everyone.

We could start grilling brats, drinking and go after pan fish.

I think the best day was when my son's new girlfriend went spearing 3 time and got more excided every time she went, she even bought a license the last time for the last 2.5weeks of the season. And the days I got to see the one I never got, it still makes my heart pump.

I think the high light of my whole season was seeing the look on Archerysnipers face when he finally got that wall hanger out of the hole. It was a look of relief and JOY. Its was great knowing that I made the spear that helped him achieve his wall hanger goal.

As for myself I enjoyed the company of a few fellow spearers and made a few new spearing friends.

I think that it was a great season for the short time that I got to spear. I stuck just enough pike to satisfy my families taste buds ,but would truly like a few more for the pickle jar as I'm on my last quart.....

Time to focus on my school studies and dream of whats to come for next years spearing season.

Ah but look back and see who had the trophy before those three years and you will see that I don't show up to give others a chance to win it confused:D, although I did still hold onto the trophy one gtg that I never showed up at because no one could spear a pike.. grin

I hope to make it to Winne after going to the last GTG at Borden. It was a great time. Already miss getting out to the shack. Steelhead season can't get here fast enough then I have to chase smallmouth then back to spearing.

Let me know when you become a grandpa. I might even be able to head west if you have a spot open......

I was in SD this week and they have very little snow on the lakes.

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
