I miss count good news! I can't wait until they decide and let the DNR know what to do! whistle

No final decision about moose hunting will be made until after the DNR consults with the affected Chippewa bands in the 1854 Treaty ceded territory of northeastern Minnesota. The DNR suspended the season in 2013 because of last year’s low population estimate.

I have friend in thunder Bay that is big time moose guy been hunting them for over 40 years. He has told me about the down turn in numbers. In the areas that moose have declined he said the common denominator is white tailed deer. areas that do not have deer have moose those that have deer increasing like the areas around Thunder Bay Dryden etc Moose are disappearing just like in MN. He is in his 70's and there were no deer in most areas until 25 years ago.

He said always been wolves there and you could shoot at will until recently I think they have a limit on them now. The one thing that has really increased is bears since they stopped the spring hunt. They are trying to get reinstated as all the cities in NW Ontario are having to whack them coming into town and causing trouble. He still thinks the main cause is brain worm from deer he grew up on a farm Near Kakebecca Falls just west of Thunder Bay and deer were very rare and moose common. Now it the opposite. I have been going to Nipigon area steelhead fishing for over 20 years and always saw moose and never saw a deer ever now we see deer every trip and sometimes go a couple trips between moose. Same in the Dryden area they even guide for deer there now. 30 years ago they would have to drive out west or to MN to deer hunt.

I've heard the same from several people up there. When the deer start showing up in numbers, the moose disappear. It's hard to say whether it's the conditions that allow the deer to thrive that are killing the moose, or the deer themselves.

Wolves have always been present in good numbers in those parts of Canada, just like they've always been present in the BWCA.

Whatever the reason, I sure hope they can figure it out. It's sad to see these animals slowly disappearing.

Bingo!

And my personal observation is when you have clearcutting of conifers, and subsequent aspen regeneration, the deer thrive. Deer and moose don't mix.

Only have to look to Isle Royal for the Answer. Low wolf numbers do not know about bear and 0 deer thriving moose same climate issues etc. Now they will crash due to eating all the food which has happened before on the Island. But the DNR refuses to look at the real issue's predators and disease possibly from the deer.
