Carl Bjorgen
I have always been slightly paranoid about these propane heaters, even though I use them regularly.A few years back I had my portable Buddy hooked up to a bigger tank with hose and regulator. After a couple hours, it flashed a big one at the connection between heater and hose. I flipped open the shack instantly, almost like I was ready to have that happen. To conclude, I cut my day short and just went home feeling lucky that no tragedy had occurred. I returned the hose and have only run the 1 pound tanks since. Never had a problem, but am always alert just in case.

mrpike1973
Jeremy 1. 3. was just how i felt i didnt wreck it still using it. 2. yes my fault it wasnt cleaned right however this was only used 2 times after i got it back from mr buddy for warranty work and they told me to go to utube and see there cleaning video. i have had 2 big buddies now and both went back for warranty work either way instead of enjoying fishing i will be recovering. i dont feel it was the heaters fault that it blew up. however how many times is enough pay $120 bucks for a heater that has let you down several times had to cut many trips short because they wont start etc. i got the second one after everyone on here said how great they were. just figured i got a lemon. anyway i'm not mad about what you said it is warranted and on a side note went out today and guess what the mr buddy wouldn't stay running. guess what i get to send back tommorrow. cant tell you you how scared i am to even try to start that dumb thing. ITsPossible
Glad your alright.I have the regular buddy and most times use the hose and filter connected to a 20# works fine for years now. Although one time last season my brother got up in the two man and when coming back in shifted the buddy ever so slightly, not enough to cut it off. The hose threads into the filter on the buddy loosened up just a crack and instantly the fitting ignited along with his pant leg. I casually reached over and shut off the 20# right away and then the buddy and then helped pat out the fire on his leg asap. If a few more seconds would have elapsed and the fire went to the tank I wouldn't even want to think about the consequence. So now out of habit I check the threads on everything after it has chances to jostle around.
BLACKJACK
Mr. Pike glad you're still walking and talking and thanks for sharing the story, hopefully we can all learn to be very careful around propane and fire!!! Good luck with the surgery.I have two of the regular Buddy heaters, both almost 10 years old. First one had some problems, wouldn't light, couldn't return since warranty was out, got the second one, used for awhile, then read about the cleaning of the orifaces, did that to the first one, has worked ever since. I do store it and carry it in one of the bags that are made for the Buddys, keeps it clean and has handy pouches for two extra cylinders. The second one sits in the box ready for the first one to die. I would never go back to the sunflower heaters.
