2 in and go to it.

Or times two times two and be safer. Suppose you could also do a little more complex math and take away a wee bit from that equation and still be ok, but 2 inches, to a newbster viewing, might not be particularly advisable smile

2 inches of good ice is plenty to walk on, however you can not convince me that 2 inches here means a duck didnt fart over there and its only 1 inch thick.

it takes one small, dark colored object just under the water, like a log or some trash, and you will have a very soft 1/2 inch when all the other ice around it 2+. We were fishing last year in 8+ inches of ice, and we found a garbage bag stuck in the ice..walked over to pull it out and holy cow..the ice started to sway around it. These items draw light to them, causing heat, not alot, but enough to really alter the early ice.

Ill hit early ice with the best of them, but i dont touch the shoreline without a float suit or a life jacket on, a buddy system AND ice picks/drybag/emergency blanket/flares/rope. I was SARS in the Navy, if i need this stuff...EVERYONE should have it.

Be safe.
