Need winter tires 2013 Tahoe

Recommended Posts

It's been three years since I bought winter tires and I seek you suggestions for a winter or all season tire. It MUST be a quiet riding tire so not too aggresive. And I would prefer it not cost a thousand bucks each! Actually, I only need it for a few months of the season so it need not be top of the line.

What do you fellas suggest?

I had my 2011 truck serviced 2 weeks ago. The service manager told me although I shouldn't need tires for another 20,000, the Michelin LTX m/s is by far (his opinion) the best tire on the market.

You can go to the Discount tire web site and read customer ratings for any tire they sell. Give more credit to customers who live in similar climates as ours.

Very interesting!! I traded my 2009 Silverado on this new Tahoe and don't recall what I had on that for tires. I am very partial to Michelins and that might be it. I picked up the Tahoe in AZ after the Silverado started eating up front tires again, as it had done for couple years. You could NOT keep that $#$%^ thing straight in the front. That and at 65K it began burning oil!!

Otherwise it was a VERY nice truck and the first Chevy pick up we had for many years.

Thanks.

Ha Ha HA! It was a comfortable, roomy and sweet riding truck; much nicer than the equivalent Ford we tested for a day. And that's coming from a guy who drove Fords for a long time. Nobody seemed to be able to keep the front end in line and after having to pop for $500 for two new front tires ( again)and the oil thing AND the fact that a Phoenix dealer was offering absurd deals on Tahoes I drove on in and drove on out. Like this Tahoe a lot. Loved the 99 I had and now wish I had kept.....GREAT snow going vehicle and comfortable.

The Silverados are nice trucks. And so are the Kings Ranch Fords.....but the Fords are more "truck like" and the Chevy's are more like a nice big car.

Remember.....just one old guys opinion.

Nothing wrong with old guys. I are one.

But I would be really hacked off if I bought a truck and it was a piece of *** like the one you had. Government Motors is not my thing. I still haven't forgiven them the 77 impala I had.

My research has lead me to Michelin 26570R17 M/S2. Read some disturbing things today about the Goodyear Wrangler HP's that are on the truck now. Have already lost one of them to "unexplained puncture, maybe from road trash" In retrospect I think the boys at the dealership were-how shall I put this-fibbing to the old guy and that the tire had just failed, as it apparently has a habit of doing.

Since I've been riding on Michelins of one size or another for fifty years probably do that. But I HAVE had good luck with the Wrangler AT's, I will say that.

Thanks.

I'm really impressed with my wrangler SRA'S on my dakota . I have had them on for 16,000 miles and I see no uneven wear, the sales guy turned me to them and I'm glad he did. Brother had fortera's(sp) on his jeep and he hated them.

Good luck on finding new Trojans. grin

Regarding tires, I am on the second set of Michelins LTX/MS on both my 2002 Tundra and 2004 Suburban. I got over 75,000 miles for the Tundra and 70,000 for the Suburban on the tires, and could have made it another year.

I realized I hadn't rotated either set in almost a year and just did that. When I checked the tread depth, they did not vary from front to back on either truck. These tires wear very well. I am on lakes a lot in the winter and have never been stuck to the extent I couldn't free myself. They are a little more expensive, but if you keep your trucks for the long haul, they are worth it. In past trucks I have also run Cooper, Firestone and Goodyear. I won't run any of them anymore. Of those three, I liked the Cooper's best for snow and wear.

Speaking of oil consumption and truck issues, our Suburban is burning a quart every 1,000 miles now at 130,000 on the odometer. It started smoking on start up at around 100,000 miles and the oil consumption has been steady since about 115,000. Between that and all the other problems, it has been a little discouraging. It still has a great ride for long family road trips.

My previous Chevy Silverado K-5 blazer with the 5 liter 305 ci engine was so much better. When I sold it after 15 years of hard use, including snowplowing, it was getting a little rusty, but mechanically sound with no oil burning, no small parts falling off, leather cracking, paint on stereo control knobs wearing off, wheel bearings going out, gauges not working, etc. The ride was still great like most Chevys. It did go through rear u joints, the back mechanical window needed continual maintenance, and I had to replace the radiator, but all in all it was very solid truck and the reason I bought another Chevy.

My 2002 Tundra doesn't loose any significant amount of oil over a 7500 to 10,000 mile oil change interval since switching to Mobile 1 at 100,000 miles. I have never added any oil between changes. In fact the truck doesn't have as much as a loose upholstery thread, nor any other problems, large or small. I have a little rust now at the bottom of the drivers side door, but it is not rusty as the rear quarter panels behind both back wheels on the Suburban. I love the ride as well - especially with Michelins on both trucks.

Apparently the oil usage is a pretty common problem on Chevys. Mine goes through about 2qts between changes. 125K on it. Love the truck, minus that little gem of an issue.

If I can ever afford to buy another truck, it will probably be a Tundra.

To follow up: made a deal on a set of the Michelins this morning, will have them on by this time tomorrow. My local place beat the big chain tire place and the Fargo Costco tire shop on price. Can't argue with that. I am VERY disappointed by the reports on the Wrangler HP's that are stock on the new Tahoe-some real horror stories about them.A guy has gotta be on his toes all the time I guess.

When you make Gozillions of something, some of them are gonna break. Did any of the people with problems drive like a madman, drive over stuff they shouldn't, tell a lie to get a new tire when they saw what their actions was going to cost them? Who knows. I went from HPs to Destinations and am happy. I hope you like your Michielins. My tire guy says the guys who don't have one fail love them. But not everyone ends up loving them, he adds.

Well Mr.S, your first sentence is right: they can all have a failure. And as stated earlier I have had GY Wrangler AT on a bunch of PU's over the past ten years so am not a GY "hater". But go out there and read some of the things about the HP's and it'll scare hell out of you.

And I gotta say, in fifty years of using Michelins on everything from sports cars to recent 3/4 diesel I have never had one fail. But I'm not naive enough to think it CAN'T happen!

I am a little persnickety about tires. We should ALL keep in mind that we are smokin' down the road at 70+ mph and all that keeps us safe is the tires we're sitting on and common sense.
