Night Fishing Lights for boat?

I was out on the river past dark and took me awhile and three trips back and forth looking for the dnr boat landing.The landing had no markings of any kind.Pitch dark it was and I had a light on the back and front of the boat.The lights didn't help .What kind of light should I get to better see the shore line with?

I look for little things like a dip in the tree line or the nearest home that will have lights past dark. One thing I have done is take reflective tape and wrapped it around the poles of the dock or a sign at the access once the docks are pulled. Any good flashlight that uses four "D" batteries will have enough power to spot quite a ways out and will hit the reflective tape.

A hand held spot light works well, however lots of cat guys go with off road lights mounted in the front of the boat. Do a search above the trending threads about lighting the boat you'll be amazed at what guys do.

I've never night fished a river (well, not in a boat), but on lakes I have never used a spotlight. I have the front and rear lights that are required, then 2 lights inside the boat for seeing what I'm doing. To navigate, I generally have lights off (except the required ones), and If I need to see better, I always have an LED flashlight.

Darren nailed it. If you're going to drive on rivers at night often, some off-road lights work best.

You get the most lumens per watt in a reliable package using HID. There are some good LED alternatives out but they aren't as bright, generally speaking, as the HID. (yet...though 3-4 years from now I expect them to pass HID).

Fleet Farm had 12v corded spot lights on sale for $4 a couple of weeks ago. I'm sure its not tbe best unit, but it is plenty bright for things like this. It will drain your battery somewhat, so best to use it when the outboard is running.

I have the 14.5" Heavy Duty Off Road LED light Bar 72W. 5400 Lumen. Draws 4A.

My buddy just got the 20" dual spot/flood which i think puts out 100W and he sure likes it too.

I also run a 3million candlepower spotlight when necessary.
