with all these combinations to tag a deer, why would anyone complain about yearling buck protection.

Look at the deer map. Most of it is 1-deer area. Most folks only need one tag, and that is all the regulation they feel is needed.

My confusion is the two deer in managed areas. Says nothing about shooting two does with bonus permits in one zone, shooting two does with bonus permits in another zone, then a buck in a hunters choice zone

Zone A and zone B? Zone 1 and zone 2? They don't matter for nothing but if you can hunt there that day. Zone 1 has a 16 day season and zone 2 has a nine day season. If one managed area is in zone 1 and the other is in zone 2 you can not shoot 4 deer total from the 2 areas.

This is straight from the DNR's Season Information Booklet (found on the DNR's Deer Hunting Page). Page 20 & 21.

Deer area limits are as follows:

o Lottery – 1 deer per year in 1 lottery or hunter choice area.

o Hunter Choice – 1 either-sex deer per year in 1 hunter choice or lottery area.

o Managed – 2 deer per year, using any combination of licenses and permits.

o Intensive – 5 deer per year, using any combination of licenses and permits.

o Metro – unlimited number of antlerless deer.

* You can mix and match seasons, areas, and permit types to fill your tags.

* Bonus permits are not allowed in any lottery or hunter choice deer area.

* Hunters should use disease management permits in 602 to take antlerless deer.

> Examples of what you CAN do:

o 1 lottery and 2 managed and 2 intensive = 5.

o 1 hunter choice and 1 managed and 3 intensive = 5.

o 1 managed and 4 intensive = 5.

o 2 managed and 3 intensive = 5.

> Examples of what you CAN’T do:

o 1 lottery and 1 hunter choice.

o 2 lottery.

o 2 hunter choice.

o 2 managed and 4 intensive = 6.

o 3 managed.

> Important points:

o You can only take 1 deer in any one lottery or hunter choice deer area. In other words, you can’t kill deer in 2 different lottery or hunter choice deer areas.

o You can take up to 2 deer total in any 2 managed areas. In other words, you can’t kill 2 deer in 3+ different managed areas.

o You can take up to 5 deer in any of the intensive areas. Again, mix and match but don’t exceed the general limit.

So now what? The reg book says one thing and a C.O. is interpreting it different than what I am reading. He says I can't shoot two deer in a managed area with bonus permits and then use my regular tag in a lottery or HC zone. He says if I tag two deer in a managed zone, one has to be tagged with my regular either sex tag.

Ask the DNR info center your original question. When they answer you, reply to them that it is not what your local CO told you and that you wish to arrange to have the confusion cleared up. The ball will get rolling just start walking after it and nudge it along if need be.

edit: or maybe bring copies of your e-mails to your CO and talk to him/her about it.

I think you are confused.

Read it twice, I also just realized this is page 3 and not page 1 lol.

Still don't see a 2" beard in the regs.... Must be online smile

OK I read page two. I still stand 100% behind everything I've said except beards to be correct.

I tend to think the regs are quite clear in this matter

You are able to tag two deer in a managed zone with management (bonus tags), then hunt in a Lottery or HC area and use your regular tag. It is in the regs, J has the email from the DNR confirming it. Not sure where all the confusion lies.

In the past, I have shot a doe and buck using my firearm tag and management tag in a managed area, then tagged a doe in a HC area using my muzzle loader during the muzzle loader season. This is perfectly legal as I am using any combination of tags.

I could also use two management tags on does during the firearm season, then go to the HC area I hunt and try and shoot another buck/doe as long as I still have my regular season tag.

This is explained in the regs and has been answered in other threads and by an email from a CO in this thread.

If the DNR officer told you this wasn't right, email the DNR. Best way to do it is to explain the situation and just ask if it is legal.

I just trimmed my beard, so am I legal? It probably wasn't 2 inches anyway.

Exactly. I've tagged deer this way the last two years

OK, I read what the CO wrote to Jayson. I'm talking about archery hunting because I don't gun hunt. By what the CO said, I would have to tag one of the two deer in a managed area with my regular archery tag. I couldn't then archery hunt in a lottery or HC area. I would have to archery hunt w/ bonus tags in an IH unit. The CO didn't say I could arrow two deer in a managed area with bonus tags and then hunt with my regular archery license in a HC or LZ.

Seriously man.

Using your bow only: You can shoot two deer in a managed zone with two bonus tags. You can then travel to a lottery or hunters choice zone and USE YOUR MAIN ARCHERY EITHER SEX TAG to shoot a deer of your choice. If you do shoot a deer in the lottery or hunters choice whether it be a buck or doe, your main "either sex" tag is gone, and you cannot shoot a buck with your archery license. You can though, go to an intensive area and shoot 2 more does with bonus tags. You have now shot 5 deer and are done hunting for the year.

Using your bow only: You can shoot a buck with your archery licence main either sex tag in a manged zone and a doe with a bonus tag. You now cannot hunt in a lottery or hunters choice zone with an archery license because those zones require you to have your either sex tag. You can hunt a lottery zone during shotgun season if you drew an anterless tag or you can hunt a hunters choice zone during shotgun season if you shoot only a doe as you've already shot a buck in a managed zone. You can also go to an intensive zone and shoot does with bonus tags until you have 5 deer total.

Any other situations?

Doesn't matter what kind of tag it is. You could shoot 2 does in a managed area with your bow and use management tags, then shoot another deer of either sex in the HC or lottery area with your bow. I believe you still don't need to have a doe permit to shoot a doe in a lottery area with a BOW.

You can though, he said it wrong.

OK, I just talked to my local wildlife guy. He confirmed what you all have been saying. You can use two bonus tags in a managed area and still use your regular license in other areas. In fact, he said you can use two bonus tags in Camp Ripley (a special hunt), and still use two more bonus tags in managed zones. Then you can still buck hunt outside of managed areas with your regular tag. So that's what I'm going by. Not that I need to shoot that many deer. BTW, this rule was changed about 3 years ago. It is all about their goal to increase antlerless harvest in managed zones which apparently somewhat above population goals.
