Muzzleloader recommendations

You really can't go wrong with a TC product. I've been using my .50 caliber Encore (coupled with a Nikon Monarch*) for 6 years now and wouldn't consider another muzzleloader. I'm bias because it's what I know. In the last three years I've taken three deer in three shots. Two through the heart.

*I use it during the shotgun season in southern MN.

I plan to get another one in the near future and plan to buy a CVA Accura MR. MR stands for mountain rifle. The barrel is a little shorter and so its a little lighter. Its got a Bergara barrel and is supposed to be very accurate. I plan to put a scope on it and use it during gun season.

Only the shooter can answer that question. I use a peep site and I shoot my muzzleloaders quite a bit but I still think 100 yards is about as far as I want to reach out there and ensure about a 100 percent chance of a kill shot. The open sights are the main limiting factor.

My muzzleloader has a scope...for slug season. I plan to get it sighted into to 200+yds...But we'll see.

That's reaching out there. Wind drift can be a pretty big factor when you get that far out. Trajectory isn't that hard to figure out and with the right load you should have enough energy out to 200. Wind can be very tricky though.

I just shot my Omega with a peep site for the first time this year. Shot a paper plate 3 times at 100 yards using my tailgate as a rest and had a five inch group. I'm sure a better shooter could tighten that group. These modern muzzleloaders are accurate once you figure out what bullets and powder the gun shoots best.

I bought a traditions two years ago, admittedly too soon before the muzzy season. I fired it only three times sighting it in. It shot perfect at my intended 50 yd range so I went hunting with it. It went click three times at deer less than 30 yards. I thought that maybe my newbie status and the weather were causing the miss fires. It turned out the firing pin was broke. I sent it back in December. It took me until November the following year to get it back. It worked the second time around and I shot a very nice buck last year with it. Granted, it was a 10 yard shot so it should have. I still can't recommend it to anyone else yet, but maybe I will if it brings another wall hanger.
