any big fish stories this summer?

Nothing humongous yet this summer for me! Biggest crappies have been just over 14" and biggest gills just over 10"

Anyone set any personal goals they are trying to meet? I've been searching for a 16" crappie for over a year and half now with no success. Well I've been successful, just not reaching my mark yet!

Let's hear what kind of goals you have set for your PB fish!

My best is a 20 1/4 smally so far for the year but I had a heck of a dream last night...ok, splain this... Fishing in a small pond and I hook into a giant catfish. It's fighting like crazy.. Everytime it gets close to me it does summersaults under the water to try and spit the hook and it had turned into a giant carp. 5 or six times it does this. Then I finally get it out of the water and it turns into some kind of strange seal. As I am trying to get the hook out it clamps down on my hand and i can't get my hand out of it's mouth. My hand starts to bleed but now i am in the livingroom and getting some blood on the carpet. Thinking Nina is not gonna like this I am trying to clean it up and my hand is still in the seals mouth. Finally it lets loose of my hand and I go grab my camera to get a picture of it. I pop the pic and look in the view finder to check it and it's a pic of a small cheetah sitting behind a desk!!! and i wake up. LOL STRANGE!!

My personal goal this year was to learn to use plastics more than live bait for crappies.I had a blast with them.I fish almost every day with them now.I found that plastics can be really productive if presented right.I did break a few of my own size records too on the Mississippi.

Jim- You have access to better waters on a more consitant basis then I but I have been a crappie fisherman for the last 10 years looking for that elusive 16" fish. When I started the goal I said I would keep crappie as my main fish (spend the most on bait and equipment) and then once my goal was reached I would concentrate on other species goals like the 30" walleye or the 40" pike or the 11" sunfish...well I have yet to get the 16" crappie but I have achieved the walleye and northern goals while in search of the crappie. Good Luck to you on the goal and I hope you attain yours quicker than it has been taking me to achieve mine!!! haha

Like Jim, my biggest crappie this year is just over 14" and that matches my PB. I'm a dyed in the wool crappie fisherman. This year I haven't put huge numbers of fish in the boat but have caught some of the nicest fish, lots of 12" and some in that 13/14" range. I've been searching for that 15"+ to mount. I'd really like to have a couple in that range to mount on some driftwood.

I can never get myself to spend much time chasing sunfish. Seems like you have to put up with a lot of pesky little ones in order to catch some decent sized ones. But boy oh boy... when you catch that 10"+ sunfish they are beautiful to look at and will out-fight a crappie any day!

My niece who never fished for walleye's ever is fishing with her husband and 2 daughters in their boat on Lake Osakis. My niece is looking at her cell phone in her left hand while she has her fishing rod with a jig and leech in her right hand when all of a sudden her pole bends over double.

10 minutes later her husband nets a 30.5" walleye. I was in my boat close by watching the whole thing! Now hows that for a personal best? full-983-36254-kathieye.jpg

We got into the big crappos back in May. I caught a 17" and a 16 1/2" within 45 minutes of each other! I would have had a dandy mount going, but, they fish were both full of spawn, and were therefore released!

The profile pic is of the 17".

Recently we have gotten into some nice ones vertical jigging, the biggest so far being 14". And just think, it's not even fall yet!
