Tony out of the Chase

Recommended Posts

Tony Stewart suffered a broken leg in a sprint car accident Monday night at Southern Iowa Speedway and won't race in this weekend's NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Watkins Glen International. The injury likely will end any hope he had of making the Chase this season.

Stewart suffered a right broken tibia and fibula in the accident and underwent surgery after being taken from the track by ambulance after the accident, acccording to a statement from Stewart-Haas Racing. The team said an update would be provided Tuesday afternoon.

The team also stated that a replacement driver for Stewart this weekend at Watkins Glen International has not been determined. The team also was scheduled to have taken part in a Goodyear tire test today at Atlanta Motor Speedway but won't know.

Stewart got out front on lap 25 and was leading when the lapped car of Josh Higday contacted an infield tire and collected the cars of Stewart, Tasker Phillips and Tony Shilling. The contact sent Stewart's car flipping.

Brian Brown went on to win the 17th Annual Musco Sports Lighting Front Row Challenge.

"Won the front row challenge tonight at Osky (Oskaloosa). Thoughts are with Smoke though," Brown tweeted. "Not the way we wanted to win. Great job by the boys."

A track announcer in Victory Lane said over the PA that Stewart was alert and conscious and was communicating following the crash.

Kyle Larson finished second.

"Ended up 2nd again tonight," Larson tweeted. "Hoping Tony is okay."

Seems the lap cars are ALWAYS a issue at most races. They will fight the leader so they do not go down a lap and then they end up taking out others.

Thier car does not work well and thats why they are in the back and getting lapped and then many try to fight with you on the track for position.

Higday hit a terra gator tire in the corner (4) and spun out in the process. He was sitting still on the track when Tony piled into him. That crash also collected the second place and third place car along with 2 others that got tires cut from debris. Kyle Larson started 20th in the field and finished 2nd, and tony Bruce jr took the back row challenge and finished 5th. Stewart started the race in P 3. Randy Martin got a huge standing ovation while wheel packing when he came by when wheel packing in his #14 sprinter. wink

Rumor is that they are already working on hand controls at the shop.

Get well soon Tony, and thank you for being a racer!

And yes, I was there.

Austin Dillon in this week..

We spent 12 days in Knoxville. One of the highlights was Jeff Gordons Kick it for Kids Cancer benefit which involves a celebrity Kick ball game to raise funds. Last year we raised $26K. This year, the game was extended from 2 teams of drivers (Last year) to 4 teams this year in a elimination tournament.. 2 teams of drivers, 1 team made up of wives and girlfriends, and one team made up of fans. In order to make the fan team, you had to enter a Go Kart race on Wednesday at Slideways Karting Center in Knoxville. Entry into the race, cost $200 and was open to the first 70 applicants. I bought a seat and gave it to my son in law for a birthday present.. In order to advance to the Kick Ball game, you had to finish top two in the 12 car heat race. The heat races were made up of 10 fans in the first five rows, and tagging the field would be Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart, (who was the title sponsor of this years games)

Since Tony got injured on Monday night and couldn't participate, they got Kyle Larson to fill his seat..

Im sure Jeff has had a lot of fun doing things like this, but I would be hard pressed to believe that he has worn a legitimate smile on his face for two straight hours very often in the past.. He absolutely had a blast out there. My son inlaw started 10th in Heat one, right behind Tony Stewarts #20 non wing driver Bryan Clauson, with Jeff Gordon right behind him. he raced his way up to 6th, but didn't transfer..

Later that night when we were in a small bar in town, Jeff came in alone and joined right in with the crowd. A few pictures were sniped from a distance, but for the most part, nobody bothered him for personal pictures, or autographs. We just enjoyed the fact that he was there, trying to have a little fun. Even more surprising was the fact that he showed up outside turn 3/4 after the bar closed and hung out with us there till almost 4am.. Pretty cool if you ask me. Im pretty sure that why Jeff, Tony and Kasey all like Knoxville so well, because they can just be another sprint car fan... something that impossible for them to do in the stock car world..

The kick ball game was played on Friday morning along with a live auction. Top auction items were a "Smoke Show" valued at $12,000. This included 12 laps in a cup car with you as the driver at TMS in September. 4 laps with Tony Stewart piloting the car. VIP seating at the race in a SH suite, Meet and greet and then Dinner with Tony. This sold for 6K..

Joey Saldana had a custom painted helmet designed my his son Reese (think M&M colors) that sold for $10K! to an anonymous phone bidder in Joeys wifes ear.. We all suspected Joe Saldana but it was never confirmed. All told we raised slightly over $96K for this benefit, and when that was announced at the race, a fan kicked in the balance to get it to just over 100K.. It was a phenomenal event..

I spent 12 days at Knoxville/Oskaloosa and attended 12 races. I never went to bed before 3 am, seen 5 am twice and the sun once. I had to hobble home yesterday, as my check liver light was flashing..

Slept like a rock last night!

Larson will have to drink a lot of Schlitz and eat a lot of wings to fill Tony's seat...

reddog, that sounds like one of the coolest weeks ever!!!

You lucky dog... Knoxville Nationals are on my bucket list. Never been there.

.

Jeff, it was a great time. 10 races in ten days

We camped in a new spot this year. Actually we leased it for ten years. Paid up front. Good for two weeks of the Nationals. Never felt better spending that kind of money before in my life, knowing our spot is secured. 2 blocks from the track. I'm telling you, if they do the deal again, and you are a Gordon or Stewart fan, there are few opportunities that allow you access and memorabilia than these days at Knoxville.
