internet and tv?

Recommended Posts

We've had Charter Cable since we moved into St Michael (6 1/2 yrs). We've always had the internet, house phone and cable tv with all the premium movie channels. We've been paying $200 a month.

This contract we wanted to get our price lower by no longer having a house phone and eliminating all or most of the movie channels. We called to see what our new rate would be.

Seems the price has gone up! - even with the phone and channels, it's still $200! with what we have now, it would be close to $300.

What does everyone else do along these lines? Gotta have some TV and definitely the internet.

we made the best decision (we think) like a lot are going to

only have cable for internet

cancelled all services for tv thru cable and now just get basic stations through HD digital antenna

add Netflix and/or hulu to tv if it has internet access for 9.99/month each

we don't miss cable at all and 99% of channels we thought were junk and never used anyway. generally if there is something you have to see it is available in some capacity online anyway so can just check on computer, saves a lot of coin

I have Dish Network with 250 channels four tv's and DVR service and pay $80.

Thats after I called them to lower the price. Internet is $22 through Century Link DSL with 7 MB service. So a little over $100 but the only movie channels I have is some Encore and TMC but most of the movies I already rented at Redbox. I also stream a few movies on Netflix too. But I usually only have that in the winter.

I did the same thing 4-5 years ago. Never missed it once it was gone. Now we have the basic channels and Netflix but I find that I rarely watch either any more. I can easily go a month without turning on the tv. Once you don't have cable you'll find plenty to keep you busy and entertained. Also if you pay for just internet you'll probably save $150/month. You can do a lot with that money.

$150/month is like a nice new fishing pole/reel every month or a new rifle/shotgun every year.

My wife says I'm a cheap skate but I call myself frugal.I recently called direct and told them I would not renew my contract and went antenna.I have only internet with my smart phone for my business and I'm saving a lot of cash every month. We had some withdrawals for a few weeks and now we don't watch tv as much and my wife and I with are two children spend more quality time then we ever did before.I'm not saying this is for everyone but I don't regret loosening the satellite to save 100 bux a month

Summer is the perfect time to cut ties with the cable company. We did it Apr '12 and subbed in Netflix to make up for just having antenna service. The only thing I really missed were Twins games. A decent antenna can be bought off the web for $30. I installed ours in the rafters of our garage and still picked up 30 channels w/all the local stations. About half of them are decent and the HD picture is really good. If you install the antenna in an area near where your cable comes into the house, you can connect to your home coax network. After being without cable for a month, the discounted offers come pouring in that can be worked against each other for the best price. We ended up going dish since they had a free NFL package last fall. The downside was that we had to get DSL since you can't run sat & cable internet through the same line. We plan on doing the same when our 2 year contract is up.

I have a galaxy S3, I have an app called easy tether. I can connect my cell phone to my laptop via usb and get pretty high speed internet with 4g. Once my phone is connected to my laptop, I can use my laptop as a WiFi hotspot and connect to my Wii, or other devices, for online gaming.

This app just uses my unlimited data package, and does not cost me extra through verizon, just the original price of the application.

I had the same issue with Charter. I kept the internet from them for something like $30/mo, disconnected the phone, and switched the tv to directv. Saved $120/mo doing that. My 2 year with Directv is almost up so I might be moving back to Charter for TV. The best way to do it is to switch every time your contract is up. It's a pain learning all the channel numbers again but it worth $50-$120/mo IMO.

We use comcast for internet connection only. Have an antenna in the attic home run to basement and distributed out to all tv locations. We use OOMA for home phone (voice over ip) so we could keep our same home phone # and dump the phone company. Like others we get all the major networks + pbs and a few others for tv. We also have TIVO (yes it works great with an antenna) because we're busy and there are some network shows we like to watch. Add in netflix and we're good...

Comcast = 65, netflix = 8, ooma = 10,tivo = 12 /mo...

hope this helps..

I'm back with Charter after dropping it for a year and having regular tv. I am once again considered a new customer so I get phone, internet, and cable for $90 a month. With 2 digital boxes and all the tax garbage the bill is $110 for all 3 which isn't bad. I think for year 2 and 3 it goes up like 30 bucks per year and then to full price. I'm sure I will drop them again sometime in the next couple years......

We've had Charter for several years w/phone, internet, tv (including HBO, Starz, Cinemax) and the price has been close to $200 a month. A few weeks ago they dropped our monthly rate to $179 incl. taxes and fees for the next 12 months saying it's loyalty payback.
