Nano line vs monofilament

I'm trying Berkely NanoFil this year for the first time. I am not a fan of most Berkely lines but they got me with their sales pitch about NanoFil being designed specifically for spinning reels ..... not twisting or coiling, and casting farther.

So far I've been happy with the NanoFil, even very happy. I have it spooled onto a couple of panfishing reels and 1 walleye reel. It's been good enough so far that I'm also going to try it on a reel I use for skipping under docks for bass.

You gotta be careful with the nano as the lighter weight micro diameter is not very shock resistant. I think I have the 2# diameter on a rod and it is really a great line for feeling a bait, be it a jig or crank but it tends to bust off with any hard shock to the line. I will go up a weight or two and see what that does for me. As far as castability and coiling, it has been great, and casts a country mile on a spinning rig and the feel is excellent.

I put Berkely NanoFil on one of my walleye rods shortly after it came out, and took it up to Canada for some walleye fishing. Man, I couldn't rip that dump off my reel fast enough! I hated it! Switched back to 6 lb mono and was happy again. I can honestly say it was my least favorite of any line I've ever tried in my life!

I use braided for most of my bass and pike fishing, as it cuts through the weeds easily. I use mono for everything else.

I have some 6 or 8 on a rod and it seems fine to me. Cast's a long way and I haven't had it break unless it has some wear and I should've cut it and re-tied but didn't. I'm typically a fan of braided line but gave it a shot and haven't been disappointed.

I gave it a shot and wasn't a fan.

I stick to braid main line and fluorocarbon leaders for pretty much all my fishing needs in MN and Canada (when I'm not using the fly rod). I use swivels with heavy musky leaders, otherwise I just use back to back uni knots to tie on lengths of fluoro leader in 12lb or 25lb depending on the application.

I'm surprised to hear some guys hate the nanofil. I put it on one of my walleye rods last year and I've had no problem with it at all...and this rod gets a LOT of use. This is on a rod that had power-pro on it and was due for a replacement, so I thought I would give nanofil a try. It's worked well for me so far.

So far it seems O'kay. It casts about 50% farther than mono. Super sensitive. I wonder it's visability to fish vs mono.

I know when trolling with a plug, its super sensitivity just has the rod shaking. Kind of annoying. But you do feel everything. There is a place for it. To bad it did not come in clear color.

I always use a 3-5 foot fluorocarbon leader.

First of all it is improtant to note that I was an big fan of Power pro. I was fortuante enough to use it since its inception. I used it in all tests but primarily I used 10lb paired with 12 lb Seaguar Floro for bass fishing (Jig worm, Senkos, florida rig, flukes, texas rig). Never had a single qaulity issue with either product.

My initial results with NANO were positive. I spooled up 10lb on 2 spinning reels then added 2 more because I was impressed. I do not like the 150 yard spool size. It makes it way too difficult to back the reel and get accurate amounts of Nano on the spool.....splitting 150 yards was not easy...at least not for me. I ended up with something like 90/60first go round which sucked. The second 2 reels i had my kid take a 75 yd run. they need to go to 200 yd spools.

Short term results were great after the spooling debacle. However this my second season with the line I have noticed excessive fraying(6ft or more each time),resulting in line removal, resulting in short spools. My reels got short lined very soon.

Last year I also spooled to rods with Power pro silk 10lb. i am way more impressed with the Silk than Nano. Yes the color fades in time but it is not pure white like Nano. I have found it to be strong line.

Castability was very good with both. Sensitivity is very good with both. Toughness goes to Silk. Color goes to Silk. Knot Strength equal.

i want to add I use the Uni knot to join Floro and Silk/Nano. I never experienced any slippage like others report. I typically wrap the knot 7/8 times on the nano side of the knot vs 5/6 like I would when joining other lines.

Nano now has a camo-green and the last 2 days I trolled with 6 pound test in camo-hgreen and than today fished sunfish with it. The 6 pound test I loved it. Trolling for small rainbow trout with very small lures I liked it for it had no memory and twist formation. Quick hook setting. Also you can cast a long ways with hardly anything on the other end.

Want to try the nano in the 16 pound test later for trolling, but feel like it is going to be to much rod vibration with the bigger plugs. Also everybody tells me you will have more breakage because there is no initial give?

It is fun to try something new. After all these years something should be better than mono?

As mentioned I am wondering about fraying of line with the nano.

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
