Almost all of the big names are off the board, but I still have faith in the process. Nobody knew who Shaka Smart was when he was hired at VCU and that went ok.... Enfield was a pretty distant name when he was hired at FGCU.... nobody had heard of Brad Stevens before Butler made a run.... the bottom line is, us armchair AD's have no idea who is really a good basketball coach and who isn't. We also don't have the handle on booster feelings and such either which I assume are a big reason Tubby is no longer here.

I am still hopeful that Buzz will be the guy and ONLY because I haven't heard him say NO yet, but everything I read talks about how good he has it where he is and I agree with that. Flip may still be a possibility and either way, I truly feel just about any new coach can bring more energy and excitement to the program than we have right now.

Mike Rice is now available....discuss. wink

LOL!!! He would definatly have more fire in his belly then Tubby did...but I don't think we want our players to get abused in practice by their coach...they get abused enough during a game by the opponents!! haha

Very few coaches can lay claim to an over .500 record in the Big 10.

. I've been watching Gopher hoops since the days before Musselman (Johnny Kundla was my conditioning instructor for crying out loud) so seeing a Gopher's BB coach fired is just another day in the life of Gopher athletics. I never would've dreamed though after winning the game against UCLA that Teague would can him.

I hope you are kidding because the entire world knew he was done if he didn't have a big run in the tourney. And I don't even count the UCLA game as a win to be frank. We were favored as an 11 seed "LOL" over a team that lost there best player the game before and ended up firing there coach. Also did you follow the 2 and 9 debacle to close out another miserable season. So Tubby was 6 for 6 in failure and to look at it any other way is insane.

Who did UCLA hire? I would imagine they landed a gem of a coach? I mean with all that good weather, high pay and storied history I'm sure they have landed the greatest coach available right? It's so easy you know. "rolling eyes"

And if anybody thinks finishing no higher than SIXTH PLACE IN THE BIG TEN in any of your 6 seasons is less then ridiculous, embarrassing and unacceptable please exit the forums now. grin

Richard Pitino (born September 16, 1982) is the head coach for the Florida International University (FIU) men's basketball team. He is the son of Louisville's head coach, Rick Pitino.

After attending St. Sebastian's School in Needham, Massachusetts, Richard Pitino earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in history at Providence College in 2005. During his time at Providence, Pitino was the manager for the Friars men's basketball team under Tim Welsh. For two years, he also served as an assistant coach for Saint Andrew's School in nearby Barrington, Rhode Island.

In 2004-2005, he worked as an administrative assistant under Tom Herrion at the College of Charleston. In 2005, he was hired by coach Ron Everhart to serve as assistant coach at Northeastern University and followed Everhart to Duquesne University the following year. He was hired on at Louisville in April 2007.[1]

He left the University of Louisville and accepted a position at the University of Florida on April 17, 2009.[2]

He left Florida on April 12, 2011, to become the associate head coach at Louisville.

Richard Pitino left his position as the assistant coach at Louisville to become the head coach at FIU on April 15, 2012.[3]

And if the new guy can't land the MN kids ....? Seems crazy to me to see most MLB teams are managed by former MLB guys, NHL by former NHL guys, football by ex-NFL or at least college guys, is there any ex-NBA guys that can coach other than Doc Rivers or Rambis ? Why isn't there a flood of NBA guys wanting to take on college hoops or are there ? I know little about hoops. Let's bring in Jamal Mashburn lol there should be a huge list of guys but there isn't or is there ?

well if you are saying that Kurt Rambis could coach you are hallucinating!!! Let's see Marc Jackson (Golden State) Scott Skiles (is he oaching in the NBA) Scotty Brooks (oklahoma) Rick Adelman (Wolves), Ty Corbin (Jazz) and these are just coaches in the NBA that were former players that i am thinking of off the top of my head and I am sure there are more...

Like I said everyone is taking my arguments to keep Tubby here out of context.  If you don’t like the guy, don’t renew his contract when it ends.  Very simple.

BUT…3.35 million (yes its gone up a bit since the est 2.5)  to bring in a coach in who will very likely NOT do any better in the next two years.  Just BURN the effin money huh.

Now it would have been different if they had a decent name all lined up ready to go,  the ends might have justified the means…I stress might.

As it is now, light a bonfire and just toss the bags of money on it

Lukewarm on the hire, but you gotta give the guy a chance. FIU had a pretty good year after a bare cupboard when Isiah left. I'll see what the staff looks like. They need some energy and maybe for that reason you're better off going young with a chip on the shoulder. "I'm not my dad, I'll make it on my own," perhaps?

DTro yeah it wasn't the best decision to give him a contract extension only to fire him a year later but the writing was on the wall and they would have lost a lot more money in the long run if they would have kept Tubby around for another 2 years...

I am not overly excited about the new hire but hey I am not gonna dog the hire until we see how he pans out. He may be the next great thing and we just signed him!!! or he may be horrible but at least we are trying to improve instead of staying the coarse with Tubby at the helm!! I mean the guy couldn't even finish a sentence let alone compete night in and night out in the Big 10.

Right on Ozzie...the loss of boosters fat stacks of cash would have easily been enough to compensate for the Tubby contract.

Mason was let go under pretty similiar circumstances...the boosters had seen enough and closed up their check-books.

I'm not all that excited by the hire. Time will tell but I think this thing plays out 1 of 2 ways. 1) He's terrible and gets canned before his contract is up and the program is worse than when it started. 2)He does great and leaves for a better job in 1 or 2 years. I hope I'm wrong and he turns this program around and stays for years.
