I've just inherited my first guns...I'm a terrible shot and need some target practice, especially before the fall and my first "real" hunting outings chasing deer, pheasants, and such. I've heard of people hunting crows, but I've always been curious about what you do with them after you shoot 'em. Just curious...

That's exactly one of the questions on the Public Input page on the DNR HSOforum...they ask if you would be in favor of changing the crow season to coincide with other hunting seasons...So, they are considering some changes.

Like many other species, especially those with few "natural" predetors the population needs to be controlled to prevent disease caused by overpopulation to result in a mass die-off of the species, that may also carry over to other bird species/livestock...the population also needs to be controlled to protect other species...crows are thought of mostly as oportunistic scavangers, but they are smart birds adept at raiding the nests of other game and song birds...baby rabbits, etc...So, that's why I would shoot them ... five less crows, may mean 10 more grouse! And as far as being defenseless...they can see...they can fly...so, they do have defense mechanisims to efficiantly avoid us human predetors.

Man, as a kid growing up on the farm we had a pet crow one summer. would fly around and land on my hand, steel your wrenches, really a cool pet...smart buggers too. Most memorable pet I've ever had.

With that said... id Go for a year round season...now that our pet crow larry bird is long gone smile
