I never intended for this post to go from an annoyance, to have fun walking out there, i dare you to come raise a complaint, or you will be singing a different tune, when your through the ice. I think its just a sarcastic way for people to actually show the concern that your actions are raising. I would NEVER teach someone to just start walking on the ice and start jumping up and down, you are 28 years young and it seems like a "super-man" approach to ice fishing. and eventually you will learn you are just as susceptible to falling in as anyone else. If you cannot tell, this is people lashing out because they know the harm your actions can put yourself and or others in your party in. I am only 26 but the first thing i tell those new to ice fishing is that the ice is never safe. so being young and dumb is not an excuse. i just hope that you learn the error in your ways before you teach a youngster to just go out there and start jumping on the pond, and test if its ready, if you fall through and die because of hypothermia well, i guess we will wait a week and try again....

hotime, I find it funny how you are complaining about the noise of a spud bar. Guys drive on the lake, use gas augers, generators, ect. and catch fish. in the summer, guys troll with a boat all the while other are running around on jet ski's and still catch fish. All year round we have jigs and lures designed to make noise for the simple purpose of attracting fish and CATCHING them. Ironically, they seem to be attracted to the dam noise yet you say it is scaring them away. The only real rant here is that this guy was invading your space. I do not have a spud, but for early ice I do have a hand auger and I often carry it out in front of me to tap the ice in questionable areas to check for "safe" ice. Also my safe ice starts at 6" because like said before, ice does not always freeze evenly and I really do not want to swim in freezing water.

Also, I know what it is like to almost go through. One of my first ever trips out ice fishing 20yrs ago the ice cracked and water started coming up behind me. when we got to our spot there was plenty of ice, just a week spot that I walked across. Spuds save lives!

Hey everyone.

Not trying to ruffle any feathers here, but I thought I would vent a little about the use of a spud bar. There is nothing worse than sitting on thin ice, (dare I say, catching fish?) and along comes Johnny Fisherman with his spud bar testing the ice.

Here's what I KNOW about fish. THEY DON'T LIKE LOUD NOISES! THUD THUD THUD THUD THUD THUD THUD THUD THUD CLINK THUD THUD THUD THUD THUD THUD THUD THUD!....And so on.

Thin ice is a time for super quiet stealth movements (ninja style) if you actually want to catch fish. Even setting down the bucket too hard could spook fish from the area for a while. By using a spud bar I feel you are stressing these fish (That just went through a severe cold front and are lethargic anyways). Should we add to the lethargy?

Do yourself a favor before you post about how the fish were "not hitting". Put away the spud bar and the 30lb test you use for Gills. If you're that scared to go on the ice... DON'T GO! Spare the rest of us so WE can enjoy the first ice bite.

I feel so much better now. Thanks for reading.

Feel free to comment how a spud bar saved your life and you use one to be safe on three inches.

Again.... That scared? Don't trust it? First time out? Wait a day or two PLEASE!

Save us from your First Ice Thunderstorm. The weather is bad enough.

Oh boy here we go!

What scares the fish more the thud above the ice from a spud bar or the commotion caused by a 225lb guy thrashing under the water?

The best test is to walk out. If you hear it crack under your feet...Turn around and go home. If it doesn't, LIGHTLY bounce harder and harder. If it doesn't crack under your feet at this point you can move on doing the same thing over and over till you get to your spot.

And this years Darwin award winner is......

Thanks for the thrashing guys.

Talk about jumping to conclusions. Totally missed my point.

If you are all so concerned for your safety and saving your life then why risk it for a fish? You all preach it. Kinda sounds like a bunghole move to me. Kind of hypocritical, but it's easier to just make fun.

I deserve it on here I guess. Really thought there would be other people on here that are anti spud.

Fishing in shallow water on four inches of ice is the discussion.

All of a sudden there's trucks, generators, snowmobiles, jet skis, trolling, Darwin and Superman.

Stay tuned for next week's post where Hotime told us to use our children to see how thick the ice is!

Wow.

Thank you for posting that! That's what I'm talking about! Hear it cracking under his feet? I've never heard it crack like that before because I know better to turn around when it starts.

When I go Ice fishing I try to find the open water to stand on.:D

That ice he was on was only a half inch. Cool to see how strong ice really is.

Rarely do we hear of a man going through without the aid of a car, sled, or a wheeler. Because we are all smart enough to turn around when we can plainly HEAR that it's not safe.

If he would have hit a spud he would have gone through right away.

Sounds like you need your baby blanket. A really sensitive baby blanket.

All in all. I'm enjoying these posts as much as you.

While a bit frustrating, some of you guys have a great sense of humor.

And to the dude that dared me to come up to him... Dang. Must really love that spud bar!

If the point was first ice at 2+ inches is not safe, why were you out there? Also, I believe that we all agree that you need to be safe on the ice no matter how solid it is and if using a spud during first ice is one small way to be safe, why are you knocking it? We all preach safety here. No one ever said DO IT, DO IT! We all agreed that a spud was one way to check the ice on the way out.

I agree that the 225# person splashing in the water is prolly more likely to scare the fish than anything we do on the ice.

Where did you see that I said I was on 2+ inches? Re-read the post.

Also...There is no one instance to speak of. Do people that use spuds have trouble reading? Should I make a generalizations or assumptions about this? Where do you guys get this from?

Plenty of times out where the Spud Slammer needs it at 10 or more inches to break open old holes too. When I see this I gladly offer to drill out the area for him or let him use my holes. They always gladly accept.

I don't think of it as MY lake. And you shouldn't either. If you can see that there are 5-10 people fishing in an area...Do you really need it to walk out to us?

caught a crappie today while some one was drilling a hole 20 ft from me

and had a flag while i was chiseling a hole less than 20 ft away

both 10 ft water 5 inch ice

So you caught A Crappie and a Chisel spooked your shiner so bad that it tripped the flag?

You do know that your flag was tripped because of the chisel don't you?

Imagine what you could have caught if you were a little more quiet.
