Critter Chewing Through Wood

Recommended Posts

I have decorative cedar shakes around the base of my deck. I've had rabbits camping out under the deck in the past. Last spring, I blocked their access with cinder blocks. Now something is chewing through the cedar to get under the deck. Would rabbits do this or do I have a new resident? Unfortunately, I live in a neighborhood where I cannot discharge a firearm, so I'm going to have to trap whatever is chewing the cedar. I'd like to know my opponent before I figure out how to trap it. I did put a small paving block in front of one of the holes and it was knocked over by the critter.

Thanks!

You live in a neighborhood where you can't "legally" discharge a firearm. One shot from a 22 with birdshot would be awful tough to prosecute. IMO

Now I know this particular section of the forum tends to end up talking about holes, but a picture would help. How big, what type of chew marks etc etc. With the spell of warm weather could be skunks, racoons woodchucks etc etc. Once you figure out the target safely trapping will be easy.

Pellet gun makes no noise. Live trap and a tub of water works too.

Hole probably made by bunny. Squirrels or chipmunks will make them too. Put a small body grip trap in front of the hole.

Squirrels do a lot of wood chewing on my wood shed and wood. Maybe a live trap with bait.
