just wondering this question. i do it because its very primitive in many respects. has been done for hundreds of years. also i like the simplicity of it all. don't get me wrong i like to angle too but its just you. a house, spear, decoy and time.

Its a rush that is unexplainable for me I think the closest I can come to with a explanation is the first turkey in your sights or the first deer you see when hunting but for me with spearing it that feeling every time a pike enters the hole.

Weather I spear it or let it swim past those feelings make me only want to do it more.

Another reason I spear is it helps me with patience that I have to have in order to sort out my busy life.

It also brings me back to when I was a young boy with my father and grandfather out spearing in the cold winter months. memories that I will never forget, also trying to make as many new memories for the future.

There are many reasons why I spear but I will list a few.

1st. Gordie nailed it - I get that rush when a pike enters the hole just like deer hunting.

2nd. It helps me to relax and gives me a reason to get out of the house and get a little exercise cutting holes.

3rd. I like eating fish and Northerns are delicious.

Also I want to help carry on this great tradition.

I spear because I love the taste of muskies.

Kidding, muskie guys, just kidding! Anyone who hasn't speared assumes it's just an all out blood-bath and you stick everything that comes in, and there's no way you can differentiate size, species, etc. The truth, as all of us in this forum know, is that you can be selective, and most of us are. We watch far more fish than we spear. There is a 100% survival rate (wound-free) if we chose for there to be, and no other form of fishing can claim that. And yes, you can tell the difference between a muskie and a pike!

I spear because it's a tradition passed down to me from my grandfather, and one I will pass down to my sons/daughters and (eventually, hopefully) grand kids. I spear because it's the only activity I do that I think about year round... When I am in the deer stand in November, jigging walleyes in May, sitting on a muddy river yanking cats in July...spearing creeps into my mind in some form or another just about every day.

Does that make me blood thirsty? A killer? A fish destroyer? My screen name has landed me personal attacks from muskie lovers, and granted it doesn't say "pike observer," so I can't hardly blame them. So I will fess up to last year's harvest... I think I speared perhaps 5-6 fish out of a possible 100+ I saw, and those were all in the 3-5 pound range. I love to eat pike, especially cold water pike, but I love to leave a bunch around, too. So opponents to the sport can take that for what it's worth, but they should realize for every person out there doing the wrong thing, there are dozens more doing it right. I think that percentage might be highest amongst any sport in the outdoors.

OK, officially off my soap-box! Bottom line, I love to spear because it raises my pulse both on and off the water. wink

there is alot of reason to me on why i spear, but i think the biggest reason that i do it is becuase to me its a family tradition. We do it becuase we enjoy it every time we are out. Its an addiction that you cant get enough of it.

Its not about spearing every fish that you see coming in, its about seeing them period and enjoying the nature of the sport. i enjoy it more seeing them adn what they do and how they do things, then anything else. Harvesting a few here an there is fun, but man there aint nothing better then seeing any type of fish do its deal in the water.

If you have never done it, i highly encourge you to get out and do it. Go out with a friend or someone in here that has done it before, and see what its like. I beat, i just beat, you will find yourself getting out by yourself one day!

because i can!!!!!!!!!! in all reality its like some of you already stated. but my biggest reason is to watch how the fish act under the ice. i think i enjoy watching the fish more then spearing or catching one. sometimes these fish act goofier then you guys on this thread!!! grincrazygrin

I think about all the great people I meet that enjoy this sport as much as I do and have made me enjoy it more. I was very young when I first speared, then a long time that I didn't because I didn't have time because all the thing going on in life. When my kid started spearing with his friends, I got the fever again. Its a simple way of life,a way to slow down in this crazy world. In a spear house you enjoy what below you nothing else matters.
