Last minute Advice?

Recommended Posts

I just looked at the weather report for Saturday morning. Usairnet.com indicates a full overcast and misty morning, with possible snow in the early a.m. My question to everyone is, how does snow, mist effect the feeding cycle of whitetail? I am hoping to hunt a bedding area opener, if the deer do not get there first!

I agree pikerliker.

Little rain or snow if fine. I think the worst weather could be a day with a high wind. Deer simply do not like the loss of thier senses due to the noise in the woods and everything moving from the wind.

By early am most deer are done feeding for the night. If the rut is going, a few rain drops is not going to stop them.

I checked for my area ib southern Mn and it looks to be a great opener. 46 degrees with a 4mph wind and a 20% change of rain.

Don't be a last minute deer hunter!

Last night a the store, there were people in line buying deer hunting rifles and shotguns, also blaze orange clothing, and tree stands.

Now being a bowhunter and taking hunting seriously, I see people doing this every year and have to wonder how much of a disadvantage they're giving themselves by not having these items they purchase time to be scent free and guns sighted in! What's up with that? sick

My advice:

1) Don't forget your toe warmers if you use them. I did that last year and got cold feet, but I have poor circulation and rely on a heat source if I'm sitting still.

2) Put the ground coffee and water in the mr coffee machine the night before so all you have to do when you wake up is press "on".

3) Apple/pumpkin/other pie. Surprise your hunting buddies with a hot dessert, they'll thank you for it.

4) Eat complex carbs. Get to bed early.

I'm going to be on stand in 347 tomorrow morning--I'm not worried about snow (or rain), but it is going to be a bit chilly.

I will be sitting from sun-up to sun-down, so I am dressing warm for lows in the upper twenties/highs in the low forties: wool socks and (light) pack boots, long johns, jeans, and coveralls, t-shirt, sweatshirt, and parka, stocking cap/insulated gloves, and so on.

If I were planning on moving more I would not dress this heavy, but sitting still vs/ moving makes a BIG difference in these conditions. I will probably switch the pack boots for rubber, the parka for a light jacket, the stocking cap for a baseball cap, along with lighter gloves, for the evening prime-time sit when it quite a bit warmer.

Final advice, please drive carefully and respectfully wherever you are headed tonight, I'm taking the back way to my destination last year just trying to get on HWY 169 was a disaster and then again HWY 10 between Little Falls and the veer to Brainerd or Motley, my god how'd I survive that mess, it was just nuts. people 80 to 80+ some pulling tiny trailers that were swerving all over, man you'll make it everybody, you really will.

last minute advice? is you safety on? be safe, be sure of your target, never point your gun at anything you do not want to shoot, treat every gun as a loaded gun, watch that muzzle!

no deer is worth the possibility of hurting another human.

having said that, the weather conditions should be ideal- the only thing better would be 2" of fresh snow on the ground, which doesn't happen in MN anymore.

Please be safe everyone. There is not a deer out there that is worth risking your or someone else's safety. Dress warm, enjoy the weather, enjoy being outdoors, enjoy the experience. Don't get too riled up about what other people are doing, if you do, it will lessen the experience. Worry about what you can control and enjoy the hunt. Good luck everyone.

To top off Triggers report realize you may be a long way from any sort of first aid, help via ambulance, hospitals, your cell may not function in certain areas of the state. Let people know your plan(s) and if you vary from them be sure to text or call someone and let them know. Charge that phone, bring an extra of everything. Be safe.
