Beeping Collar for Pointing Dogs??

Hi Guys!!

What are your thoughts on the collars that beep either continuous (every 5 seconds) or so?? Or what I am looking at is the kind of mode that is silent until the dog points then after 5 seconds it beeps every 5 seconds? Do you think this “Beeping” would scare birds out prematurely?? Heck in late season where I hunt the “Slam” of Truck Door will scare up birds. But I also hunt where the vegetation is 4+ feet tall in many areas so if my dog goes on point it can be impossible to truly locate her and approach her the most effective method. Not necessarily looking for name brands but your thoughts on the concept in general. Do you think the “Beep”, “Beep”, “Beep” scares off birds??

My buddy swears by his beeper collar. I find it rather annoying, actually, but can see the practicality.

For instance, in the grouse woods, it would be great to send Remy and wait for the beep of a point. But I've noticed that grouse tend to be a bit jumpier than their grassland loving cousins, so a long cast might result in bumped birds, even if the pooch is honest.

I like seeing my dog work, so I seldom need a beeper. Are there instances where I wish I had one? Absolutely. But in general, I fend them more of a nuisance than a benefit.

I have the dogtra 2500 and I turn the run/point mode off so that it only beeps when the dog is on point as I find it annoying to beep every 5 seconds. I run multiple dogs at once so I am using the 2502 system and it works great and never had an issue with it spooking birds.

I also use the manual page to locate the dogs when I cant see them. I wouldn't hunt with out a beeper. Way better than the old fashioned bell lol.

It's personal preference.

I have a Sportdog and don't use it. I find them annoying.

It is also really loud and I didn't like the idea of setting a loud beeper two inches from my dog's ears.

Initially I added cotton balls and electrical tape to the beeper to muffle it. Eventually turning it off. Now I don't even have it on the collar.

If needed, I add a bell to the collar.

I swear by mine, if only because I hunt behind a smaller dog. (My 30-pound Brittany.) Without it, I would walk by him on point constantly in thick stuff.

I've used the hawk screech version, which is meant to hold birds, as well as the kind that emits a simple beep ... I don't notice much of a difference. Be sure you test it though, as has been mentioned here before. Mine is a combo unit that has volume adjustment, so I don't run into the issue with it being too loud.

I like the beeper, it lets me, and everyone else know right where Schultz is. I can see how some might find it annoying though, but those are mostly the guys without dogs so s*rew em. It might spook a pheasant or two once in a great while but for the most part it works great. My buddy took schultz out last year after a rooster we saw land up on the hill, so he took schultz up there with no e-collar and he thought schultz ran off or something, and I yelled if you cant see him running around he's probably on point, and sure enough my buddy missed the 3 roosters that got up right in front of where Schultz WAS pointing. With the beeper on it would have been a different story.

Where it's really nice is when I can let Schultz outside at home when were not hunting and let him run around and every once in a while I hit the beeper, he could be out in the middle of the swamp and as soon as that beeper sounds, it's a full on dash back to me.

Very rarely will I run my beeper on run mode. Like Chris said, point mode and locate are why I run them. Especially because I usually hunt with two dogs out at a time even with bells its very hard to determine where your dog is with two of them clanging around. Wouldn't hunt without it now...

I grouse hunt in the woods with a pointer and I don't think I could do it without a beeper. Sometimes the stuff is so thick it's hard to find the dog even with an orange vest on and a beeper going.

At times I have it beep every 10 seconds so I can keep track of him, but mostly now I only have it beep when he's on point. Beeps or hawk screams, I mix it up depending on the mood I'm in.

I've never noticed a bird that spooked because of the beeper.

I agree with everyone here get the beeper...you can turn mine on/off at the transmitter. I have a young dog and like to know where he is. Is it a little annoying, sure but no annoying than wondering if your dog is running away from you or towards you.

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
