Off topic walleye VS. muskie

What would you say a 30 inch walleye is compaired to in muskie standards? My buddy was giving me dump about only catching 4 walleyes over 30 inches and said I should at least caught a 32", but he is working on getting a 55" muskie. To me a 30" walleye is like getting a +56". Let me know your opinions thanks.......

As with anything comparing the two is relative to the body of water you are fishing.

If you are talking a 32" walleye on Mille Lacs, that would be like a 60" musky IMO because a 32" walleye is ultra rare on that lake or fish over 29 even.

I would say a 28" walleye would equate to about a 50" musky in rarity for most lakes. 32" though just about anywhere is so uncommon I think a 56 plus is about right.

Well I'll size it up with a true story. I was fishing with my daughter one day and we see a 55+ muskie swim by the boat. I threw 3 casts at it with a bucktail and nothing. So I ask Katie to hand me my jerkbait rod, I casted it out and thud. So I set the hook hard expecting to feel the wieght of a 50 lb fish and it moved way too much, thinking it was swimming twards me I set it again and see a walleye head. I handed the rod to katie being I didn't want a garbage fish on. She reeled it in and it measured 30 and 1/2 inches long, she was happy but I was POed that a lesser fish ruined my chances at a REAL fish. I have cought a 55 inch muskie and it is by far the greatest accomplishment of my fishing life. Now the 24 inch brown trout that I C&Red......

Yes, it really depends on the body of water.

But I'd say an avid musky fisherman should catch a 50 far easier than a serious walleye fisherman will catch a 30. Even if you go to 'big fish' lakes, you likely will catch hundreds of walleyes before you get a 30 incher, even if you're good. If you're fishing for big muskies on big fish lakes, you'll probably get a 50 incher before you catch fifty fish.

I'd say a 30" walleye is as common as a 54" musky. Like someone else said, I think a 28" walleye is like a 50" musky.

I've come much closer to a 50'' musky than I've come to a 30'' walleye. My PB walleye probably still needed another five or six years to hit 30'', while my PB musky mighta hit 50 in a year or two.

But then again, I've caught just about as many walleyes as I have muskies in the past four years crazy

It took between 40 - 50 muskies before I got one over 50. But even after hundreds of walleyes caught, I still haven't gotten close to 30. Several over 28, but that 30" fish is hard to find.

The "real" answer is in fish statistics: I think there are way more muskies, percentage-wise, that will reach 50" than there are walleyes that will reach 30".

Percentage wise yes but there are way less muskies out there. Also, walleyes are easy to catch, any joe blow can go catch walleyes. Not so much for skis. I would have to say it would probably take less time to boat a 28 inch walleye than it would to boat a 50 inch musky assuming you are on good waters and know what you are doing.

30 1/2" walleye, "garbage fish?"

"any joe blow can go catch walleyes?"

"28" walleyes are easy?"

Wow, you guys are spending WAY too much time on the internet and not enough time out in the real world.

Oh I'm out there....maybe you just aren't a real fisherman. wink

If you read my post I didn't say catching a 28 inch eye was easy. I said walleyes are easy to catch and if you are on good waters it will likely take less time on the water to boat a 28 inch eye than a 50 inch ski.

Triple digit days for eyes aren't that uncommon but double digit days for skis are. Not bashing on the walleyes just trying to add to the discussion.

I'm sticking with Garbage fish, Come on anyone who thinks you can compare THE top of the line preditor in NorthAmerica to a visually impaired oversized perch is, well nuts! crazy

Well, in areas where you aren't allowed to keep walleyes upper 20's fish are pretty common (as in 1 of every 5 fish is over 25), and 30" fish aren't especially rare. The problem is pretty much every lake is catch and keep on walleyes, so in most waters a 30" fish is extremely rare.

Not to mention the ugliest fish swimming in Minnesota waters, and while it's nice and flaky and easy to prepare and eat, it's pretty bland and flavorless and WAAAYY overrated as an eater fish.

I'll give my 2 cents. I have found that while fishing with family and friends the biggest walleye often goes to the least experienced fisherman (i.e. my aunt who has fished maybe twice in her like caught a 31 inch walleye her first trip to canada; my grandma who has never fished caught a 30 inch walleye her second day walleye fishing; another uncle who has rarely fished caught a 31.5" walleye his first trip north) all while trolling bottom bouncers and the 3 out of 4 biggest walleyes caught in the last 8 years. On the other hand I have never seen a person with no experience or very little CAST and catch a 50+".

If your mission is to catch big walleyes or big muskies then you can do it.

Successful fishermen of different species have lots of things in common; persistence, patience, drive, intuition and an open mind being just some of them.

Catching big fish of any species with any kind of consistency isn't easy for any angler that just goes fishing and rolls the dice.
