Dead fish being found along shores

Jan Siemucha lives in Hecla and says a combination of heat and low water levels are causing mass deaths of the fish population along the North Dakota-South Dakota Stateline. Siemucha says most of the fish are Walleye and Northern Pike as well. She says hopefully water can be released up stream to help alleviate the problem.

High heat creates depleted oxygen levels.. fish die.. it's nothing new.. same thing can happen over winter.. it sucks.. but rarely does it have an overall noticeable effect

The forecast calls for decreasing temps now along with some rain storms. Hopefully that will help the situation too.

With the sound with the last few days (today not withstanding) there have been lots of dead ones floating up around the NW side of Mille Lacs. But I suppose that's not exactly what you're talking about.

I know in Tetonka lake in South Central MN there was a recent post of multiple dead carp of about the same size floating in the lake. It was rationaled that a certain depth became low in oxygen (because of the similiar size to the dead fish). It was also commented that weed die off's were contributing to the oxygen debt. Not too many people would be upset with a carp die off though.

Lake I was on had several dead floating pike. One was probably 30inches. It's a very shallow lake, so I'm guessing low O2 is what's getting them.

What I have learned is that there is a thing called anoxia. It plays a big part in the mid to late summer degradation of the water quality. The water temp on Bald Eagle was consistently 86 degrees on the 4th and I had a spot in a bay where it was 91. Fish can't survive with the low dissolved oxygen. I don't have a device to measure Bald Eagle but I won't be surprised if there is a large die off in a lot of lakes if this heat doesn't let up.

I'm surprised the local lake here hasn't seen a kill yet.. it's been blooming with algae for a good couple weeks now... my guess is the aerator in the lake are barely keeping them alive...

midnight lows in the high 60s-low 70s this weekend should help.. hopefully

I was on Lake Yankton at Balaton MN(in sw mn) and the water temp was reading an average of 83 degrees yesterday. It needs to cool off quick!!!!

ya i think that from catching those fish in deeper water and then releasing them they cant take it in that warm water

Last week I had heard of the dead fish on Geneva lake near Albert Lea,Mn and had to go see for myself.What I saw was almost unbelievable.To say the fish kill was in the thousands is no exaggeration at all and the sad part is they were mostly northerns and game fish.I don't know if simply lowering temps will help freshen things up or if it is going to take a measurable rainfall which isn't in the forecast at all.

The high temps bring out the various fish bacteria and diseases that run rampant when temps get higher.

Lots of dead northerns on Loon Lake too. A buddy said he saw some nice walleyes dead on crystal also....

So sad, we finally get a winter where we dont even NEED the aerators on and now this. Enough to make a guy sick to his stomach

Here in Colorado we do not yet have dead fish floating on the shores, however due to lack of snowfall, lack of rain and high temps we have very low water levels and high water temp. This is causing stress on fish that are caught and released in our rivers and streams. Some fly shops are urging anglers to not fish in the middle of the day when water temps peak. This has happened the last few yrs out here. The DOW has opened a few reservoirs to promiscuous fishing to harvest the fish that soon will be dead due to the above.

I am afraid that this will be happening more and more in the future.
