URGENT - Suzuki Owners

B@ssDoctor

Question

I am ready to buy a pontoon whihc has a 2009 Suzuki 90 HP four stroke. I would like your thoughts on Suzuki 4 strokes. The good, bad and ugly.

I do not need "I would by a Yammy becuz..." or "Honda is the shiznit".

I would really like your thoughts on this as I am ready to buy it today but know nothing about them. Obviously the motors are OK, since they are used for crab boats in the south.

Let me know....

I have both the '08 Suzuki 60hp (pontoon) and '09 Yamaha 115 (Lund fishing boat). Both have been great motors - fuel efficient, quiet, clean.

A little more hassle doing the oil change on the Suzuki due to having to take apart the lower edge of cowling to expose the filter. Also on the Suzuki turning the key part way waiting for the tone to stop, before fully starting. Yamaha, just turn the key and start it like a car.

Not huge deals by any means, and I know some will be critical of me for even mentioning them, but they are minor issues/realities that I didn't realize.

It wouldn't have mattered much in my decision though, because even though I wanted a Yamaha on the pontoon, I bought Suzuki because the local dealership near our cabin sells and services them. That was important to me because in case anything did go wrong (which it hasn't). I don't leave my fishing boat up there.

I have a suzuki 150 and it is an amazing motor. At idle you do not even know it is running. I have buddies that have Yamahas and Hondas while they are nice motors, they are not nearly as quiet or smooth as my suzuki.

It takes like 2 seconds for the beeps to stop when starting so that isnt a big deal.

Suzuki is the only 4 stroke outboard that ALL of their motors exceed the ultra low emissions standards.

I did a lot of research about other brands before settling on the suzuki. Strongly considered ETEC and Yamaha, but after hearing the horror stories of major issues with the large ETEC models and the injector problems my buddies have had with the Yamahas I made my choice. It helped also talking with a service tech that works on all makes and he said "I dont remember the last time we had a major issue with a suzuki".

All the motors are really good these days. Make sure you have a fuel/water separator installed with ANY motor you get.

The ethanol and water in fuel these days it will cause issues down the road otherwise.

I don't own one, but the guy I fish with the most has a 90hp Suzuki. I've fished out of his boat about 30 days per year for the last five years. It starts on the first turn of the key every time and is very quiet. He's never had to have any repairs or service work done since he purchased it in 2007. Only routine oil and lower unit changes. I also have a friend with a 250hp and it has great hole shot and top-end speed for a four stroke.

I own a Yamaha, but I'm very impressed with Suzuki and would not hesitate to buy a boat with one on the back. I'd buy the pontoon.

Suzuki 140hp on my 1992 crestliner and I LOVE it. Its very quiet, powerful and economic.I was reluctant to repower an older boat but I have zero regrets.Suzuki 4 strokes are a great motor IMO.

Had to go in the back and look down to see if it was running.

Reminds me of the time my friend walked down to the dock and told me to fire up the 'zuki so he could hear it, told him it was already running. smile

Congrats on the boat and motor, that Suzuki will treat ya well.

Don't you love that.

Had the same issue with my merc. Friend standing on the dock near the bow waiting to cast off says "start it up and I'll push us off". The motor was running. laugh
