Opener was ok. Saturday being the best day. Sunday was ok. Monday was awful. Biggest was a 20". Lost a monster next to the boat. She sucked in the bait when it was on bottom and I didn't get a good hook set. booooo.

My neighbor and I went out for a few hours yesterday morning. We didn't find the numbers but what we did find was quality. We boated a 15",17",18.5",19", and this dandy, which is 21", 4lbs-12oz. I was throwing senkos and creature baits in 5ft of water.

It was a great way to start my day!

Made it out Sat. early morning on a Zimmerman area lake. Ended up with about 8 or so bass from 1-2 lbs, nothing real big. Most were caught on a frog with the biggest coming on a lake fork ring worm. It was fun watching them hit the frog, with a few jumping past it and missing!

Made it out during the heat of the day on Sunday on a lake near me. Only got one for 3hrs out, but it was a real nice fat bellied 5 lber. Sometimes 1 big one is better than 10 one pounders. smile Caught that one pitching a Beaver bait in the rushes.

It's great to have the Bass opener here again! Sorry,no pictures, my darn camera on my phone is broke. frown

Opener was pretty inconsistent for me up in the alex/fergus areas. Inconsistent weather/winds/temps this time of year usually means inconsistent bite and that was definitely the case. We spent almost six hours waiting out storms at the accesses for the 3 day weekend, I can definitely say that was a first for me.

We ended up putting 12 fish over 4 lbs in the boat this weekend but didn't manage to crack 5 lbs. Biggest went 4 lb 14 oz. We found fish in all stages of spawn on the various lakes we fished. Saw a few fish on beds including a pair of 4+ lbers on the same bed which was pretty cool to see. We caught fish on swim jigs, lipless cranks, t-rigs, jigs, and grubs. We caught fish as shallow as 1' of water all the way out to 12' of water. All in all it was a good weekend other than the tail kicking the smallmouth gave us on sunday, we shoulda left the lake as soon as we saw the water color. Less than 2 foot visibility on a lake that normally has visibility in the 12+ foot range was a recipe for lock jaw.

I had an old college buddy come up for the weekend and we went on a 4 day fishing escapade for the opener. We hit pool 2 on friday and the frog bite was on fire - I have not caught fish on a frog like that in a long time. Swim jigs were also good and all fish were post spawn. On Friday afternoon we drove 3.5 hours north to fish a smallie lake for the opener. It ended up being one of the best days I've ever had for smallmouth. There were prespawn and spawning fish - flukes, grubs, tubes, and clousers worked best (caught 2 over 4lbs on the fly rod which was a riot). On Sunday we fished another lake up north for largemouth - I'd say the fishing was par for the course, but nothing spectacular. Yesterday we fished a local metro area lake and caught many smaller fish with a few nicer ones mixed in - all postspawn fish as well. I'm used to having to deal with fish in an all out funk on certain lakes this time of year due to the spawn and immediate post spawn fish. I really dislike fishing during that spawning and immediate postspawn phase. I'm liking this warmer spring as it seems most of the fish around the metro area are near there summer spots already. All in all it was a good weekend.

We got them really well on Friday up shallow on light weighted creature baits. We saw the females, but there were spooking way too easily.

Monday we were able to find thge bigger bite off the first break around a point on a NorthStar Custom Baits Flip & Swim jig.

Opener was pretty good for only a couple hours before the storms hit the metro. We ended up with 17 total, 4 fish 17in plus with the largest at 19in. Pretty good considering the storms the day before, but I wished there was a more consistent bite. The bonus of the day though was the girlfriend her PR at 18in, beating my biggest of the day full-34780-20990-dsc_1136.jpg

We have been playing catchup since like February, trying to keep up with TW and the HSOforum. I initially talked to Thorne Bros and a couple others in January but quickly got over ran with orders so I had to pull the plug on expanding into any new retailers this spring. Hopefully we get caught up here enough in the next couple of weeks to revisit this soon, I really want to expand here locally and with the new shop and more space we should be able to!

Where do you guys get your northstar swimjigs from? I want to order some and TW always has them on backorder. Are there places around the cities that have them?

North Star swim jigs are outstanding. Just outstanding. Great hook, the right weedguard, skirts are tied on, and some of his colors are crazy good. When the swim jig bite is on I could make a pretty good living with a box full of nothing but Smokey Bluegill, Olive Minnow and Watermelon Magic. Actually, that's pretty much what I have now that I think about it...heh.

One thing that's really, really high on my to do list this season is to experiment with swim jigs in other situations beyond shallow cover. Had some experiences last fall using swim jigs in deeper water that were real eye-openers...

I'm finally going to get to bass fish this weekend, and one of the rods on the deck will have a swim jig on, for sure.

I use twin tail grubs a lot - lots of vibration when the bait's moving fast, but they kind of act like a parachute when you pause your retrieve. I like the new Berkley Havoc twin tails - the body is a little longer so the tails are out past the skirt, and they're fairly tough. Plus, they're dirt cheap, which I like.

When I want a little less commotion, I use Zoom Swimmin' Chunks, which are kind of hard to find sometimes, but are great subtle trailers.

I also - especially when the water's got a little color to it - like thumper tail trailers like a Keitech Swing Impact.

Whatever trailer, get some Hitch Series trailer hitch clips. Sunfish love tugging at the tails on swim jigs, and the trailer hitches will save you a lot of torn up trailers.

Cheers,

RK

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
