picksbigwagon
Okay, I am stumped, my gas grill (4-6 years old, we aren't really sure) a char broil commercial series, has 4 burners (and one side burner)and when I turn it on to light, I get a great burn on the first burner, as soon as I turn on the second the heat (flame and temp) is cut in half, and each time I turn on a burner it keeps getting lower and lower. My first thought was maybe a bad gasket or seal on the quick connect and there is no gasket in there (which right now as I type this makes me wonder if there shouldn't be on in there ?) So I took the grates off, cleaned off the burner tubes (they were really clean) and Like i stated, I am stumped. Anyone have any thoughts? I don't want to buy a new grill, this one is just starting to get broken in.....yes I should have highlighted BROKEnThis series was the last series Char Broil made that had cast iron grates, Not porcelien coated, good ol' cast iron, which is why I bought it. reinhard1
while i'm no expert on this, i had this happen to my stove in the camper. i was told to get a new regulator. that's what it was and it's been working fine since. good luck.

picksbigwagon
regulator huh? Is that going to be something I can replace my self or am I going to need a new hose assembly and new tools and parts?
reinhard1
i bought the hose and the regulator combination. didn't want to deal with taking this apart [no mechanic]. the hose was old too so i figured might as well get it all in one piece. good luck. picksbigwagon
I just found some online, so now I just need to find one close to home.....I have an old dual line at home from an old gas stove that still have the regulator on it, If I can find it, I will start taking things apart. what should I use on the threads, good ol' teflon tape? DonBo
If I'm not mistaken, those gas lines have compression fittings and shouldn't need any tape.
bak2MN
And if they are not compression fittings use the yellow teflon tape which is for gas.
Juneau4
The lines are low pressure after the regulater. Just replace the reg. and connect to the old lines using a hose clamp.
picksbigwagon
So no new tools? How about a router, or a lathe, or maybe even lift? My wife expects new tools to be bought when I tackle "projects" and I hate to disappoint her. I already have her convinced for the need for a new pressure washer, maybe a TIG or MIG welder? DonBo
Try the pressure washer first to clean out the old regulator and lines. Worth a shot right? BTW, big tool sale at Sears this weekend.
toughguy
Maybe a new smoker? Tell her you need it to slowly warm up the new regulator before it's installed.
Redlantern
No teflon tape on gas fittings. Teflon sometimes tears off when threading and may plug the regulator, pretty much wasting everything you've just done. Compression fittings are out, too. Flare fittings with minimum type L copper. However, most regulator kits that you can purchase will be all you need. Just get the hose and regulator and you'll be set. Another thing to consider is are your burner tubes clean? Spiders like to plug them up just to be spiteful.

Jigging Joe
I dont think you need a new regulator. Try this:- Un-hook the hose from the tank- Turn all burners on- Leave sit for a minute or so- Turn burners off and hook hose back up to tank- Turn tank valve on real slow- Relight and see if that fixed itI've had 2 issues this winter with this same type of problem, theres something in the regulator that gets stuck and reduces the gas flow, by following these steps you reset the regulator. Worth a try, worked for me.
fishingstar
I was told that char broil had a bad run of regulators. last year I took the regulator off and put on a heat register and it would work. This year that didn't help. home depote has them for $20. Mine works as good as new.Dan

Worth a try, worked for me. Both of my Webers do the same thing. Sometimes I need to whack it with the handle of my grill brush(not while connected to the tank), but it always works afterward.I'll probably change out the regulators this summer because it is getting more frequent, but this is a quick and cheap fix if it does start happening and you don't want it to ruin the party or a good steak. picksbigwagon
I have my grill up and running, replaced the hose and regulator. Went to ACE in prior lake and they these little smoker trays from Amazen Products that uses wood pellets to create smoke. It is capable of cold smoking so I guess I will need to get my smoker out of the attic and get some thick cut pork chops to smoke.....
