"or start your own personal lake that the state, co, or dnr has no jurisdiction over (and u wont need a license)"

Got news for ya. The DNR has jurisdiction over private lakes also grin

I heard of a guy that left a portable on his small private lake overnight and got a ticket for not having it licensed.

ouch!! ....have fun!

I agree Crappie, ignorance is bliss I guess. Yep, lets make sure that no smaller boats are on a large lake when the waves are "too large", and keep the cars off all snowy roads, not just 94 in the boonies, to prevent the hundreds of thousands of dollars in vehicle and bodily damage that can happen with even just 2" of show. Remove firearms from homes so that the bad apples can't break in, steal them, and murder someone. FOR REAL GUYS, I'm just following the logic of some of you. Going through the ice involves me, my car, and potentially rescuers that fully understand the risks of their jobs. Polluting the water argument, WOW, all I can say is OUTBOARD MOTOR, better get rid of them too. Now I have to tell the nieces and nephews that there will be no more fishing in my Ice Castle, well I could bring them out on the three wheeler, but I'm afraid that someone will tell me I am endangering the children by transporting them on an ATC. To the logical, GOOD LUCK.

A couple last comments.

First, I am not sure if those that are using the word "Darwinism" in this friendly debate are sure of its meaning. Darwinism can also be referred to as "survival of the fittest". This is not the same thing as "nature weeding out the stupid" which I think is what you may really mean.

For example, if this was Darwinism, and a certain subgroup of the population kept driving out and falling through the ice over the next millions and millions of years - it wouldn't necessarily mean they would disappear from the earth. It might actually mean they would adapt and evolve to the situation. They might grow gills or fins to swim once they fell through the ice and thus become even better suited for these poor ice conditions.

On a serious note, as stated before, I am sure there are a number of folks who have thrown caution to the wind, who have ignored the tell tale signs of thin ice, who do not know the area - yet venture out anyway and then go through the ice. But on the other hand, this year there have been the same number of seasoned pros, resort owners and the like who have gone through the ice as well. The point is...its the weird year we are having. Its not that its mid-December and some are driving out too early. Its that its almost Mid-February and the ice has not formed properly across the board. One area with 15 inches of ice can have 8 inches just 100 yards away - and who has the radar vision to know that? I know I dont. I am usually one of the first to say "dont let one bad apple spoil it for the rest". But in this case, I dont mind. Its just the year, its not going to be the norm.

hmmm....I am not relating to that comparison. What we have this year is unsafe and weak ice formation due to a very strange weather pattern compared to our normal Winters.

Every Summer there will be a sudden storm that comes up or possibly folks taking their boats out in unsafe windy conditions. People will capsize boats and possibly there will be drownings. That will happen. That will happen year after year.

Every Winter people will drive out in unsafe ice conditions and break through. That will happen. That will happen year after year.

The difference is this year for our Winter weather pattern we have experienced something completely strange and different from past years. It is unique and probably unprecedented. So, there was a decision made to try and keep the rest of the Winter fishing year as safe as possible.

Will we have this happen every Winter? Will this happen year after year?

I highly doubt that and am willing to take this decision and ride it out this year. Next year will be upon us soon and I doubt we will have the need to discuss this friendly debate again.

But what if all of a sudden they change the law because of the people that are driving out now and going down. They change the law to noone drives a car or truck out on a lake, now that affects me because of others that may do something stupid. It like the seat belt law, if you don't do it you get fined. That was pushed upon everyone, like it or not.

Awful lot of black helicopters out there. Apparently the folks in law enforcement are ignorant toads simply wanting to ruin everyone's fun. If only the unseasoned and ignorant are the one's going through the ice does it not make at least a bit of sense to prevent them from doing so? The solution obviously is to have guards at every entry onto the ice and develop some sort of test to see if you are ignorant or unseasoned and then to let those that pass the test go on out. Perhaps the Dems will see the wisdom and set up such a program possibly with funding through the Lessard Council.

this has been a unusual year regarding ice conditions. a couple of cold nights dont change a thing. cold nights have to be consistant and down here that has not been the case. check out next weeks temps.when someone looses their life it has more of an effect than that one person loosing their life.

that person's loss of live is enough of a tradgedy. then there is his or her family who will be struck with this loved one's loss of life. when was the last time any county did this? when it is done it is for everyone's safety. if some want to drive on lakes there are plenty of lakes to drive on that do not have this counties guidlines.

good luck.

Flotation Requirements

Lakes Mendota – Monona – Wingra

Vehicles weighing over 850 lbs. require special use permit. Vehicles weighing under 850 lbs. require flotation and a permit.

All other Dane County Lakes

Vehicles weighing over 850 lbs. require special use permit. Vehicles weighing between 750 – 850 lbs. require flotation and a permit. Vehicles weighing under 750 lbs. have no restrictions.

All vehicles requiring flotation and/or a permit must be inspected. Inspection dates, times, and location are listed below.

Specific Vehicle Type Flotation Information

Snowmobiles – Require 16 cubic feet of flotation.

All Terrain Vehicles(ATV) – Require 5 cubic feet of flotation. Note: ATV's are designed to float themselves, but not the passenger(s) and gear.

Inspection Fee

There is now a $10.00 inspection fee for all new and renewal inspections. The fee is payable by cash or check (must have photo ID), and must be paid at the time of inspection.

Flotation

Flotation must be mounted as equally as possible, front and back, or side to side. The floats must be hard mounted to the machine (bolts, metal brackets, chain, cable, etc.). Nylon straps, bungee cords, ropes, etc. are not permitted.

The flotation material used is most commonly styrofoam, either in sheets, blocks, or sprayed. Popcorn or peanut type packing material is not acceptable. The flotation should be enclosed/protected by wood, metal, aluminum, or plastic to prevent it from breaking. Air filled containers are not acceptable. Pictures of some sample flotation are shown below.

Each cubic foot of flotation will float 60 lbs. Diameter measurements can be deceiving. Each diameter measurement listed below equals one cubic foot of flotation. If using cylinders, you will need to multiply the length times 5 for an ATV, and times 16 for a snowmobile to get the correct length of cylinder needed.

6 inch cylinder X 61 inches long

8 inch cylinder X 35 inches long

9 inch cylinder X 27 inches long

10 inch cylinder X 22 inches long

12 inch cylinder X 15 inches long

14 inch cylinder X 13 inches long

0 as in ZERO vehicle deaths THIS YEAR.An average number of others so far.

Most breakthroughs are in known weak areas or partial breakthoughs on heaves.

Shutdown Accesses with an 8 hr. notice.

Zero degree weather with no snow on the ice for 2 days after shutdown.

No real direction or organization to get permys off.

LOGIC TO THIS DECISION????? PLEASE EXPLAIN WITH FACTS NOT FEELINGS!

There were (12) in 2002, (7) 2004, (4) 2010 deaths and the overwhelming majority were not in vehicles.

Most of the deaths on ice are not vehicles going through vehicles are only 16% on average.

Vehicles going through make for great shock value but aren't the killers the media makes them out to be. Are you all for an ATV/ snowmobile ban on the ice as they have far more fatalities?

Welcome to another episode of "let's all get afraid". This shutdown is like cable news where every crime or problem across the nation is "breaking news" and scary. I give up!

Rich Stanek is an elected official remember his silly panic Stanek decision next election.

Alright. So, I just put an "appointment" in my Iphone calendar to revisit this issue one year from today. I would invite the rest of the posters here to do the same. Write down a note, put a mark on a calendar, whatever you do to keep track of things.

I want to do a little experiment a year from now and revisit this issue. I will be interested to see how many "rights violations" are continuing, how many closed access points have been installed, how many boats have been kept off the lakes in the summer, how many law changes there will have been (or even just proposed), how many ATVs will be required to have flotation devices and just whatever else has been discussed here as some kind of negative effect from this decision. It will be very interesting to revisit this a year from now. I cant wait.

It looks like the news terrorists strike again! A truck could break through at a launch in 2' and the news would be there. They've officially turned public sentiment to the point where they had to shut it down. Too bad they can't mention the drive to the lake is more dangerous than the ice.

This is very much an issue of access. I know for me personally that on many lakes I have to park on the water because streets are filled with "no parking anytime" signs, cities have ordinances that any vehicle on a street at night will be ticketed, and launch parking lots only allow vehicles with trailer or close.

Does anyone have any experience with ice rescue? I never thought they operated in a manner that would put a rescuer in serious risk of death in order to save someone.

I think this is one of the best states in the country as well. Our taxes are bit out there, but you can't beat the good people and places. At least it's not Texas...or California...shudder.

Do y'all know that there are some lakes in WI that you can't even take a sled or atv out on unless you have approved floatation attached to it?

It's true

My father has a lake home down there and it's rediculous to a point. you certainly can't drive anythig large down there and almost all the shacks are small perms. We're just north enough (for now) to not have this worry until the Gloabl Warming theorists partner with PETA and it all goes down the drain.

On the brighter side the 2012 Apocalypse is staged to ruin another perfectly good ice season. No wonder the Mayans never ice-fsihed.

    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
