What a winter this has been! Should we just call it?

I have never remembered a winter when so many people have lost so many trucks, cars, ice houses through the ice or forgot or lost so much fishing gear at the landings or on the highway! confused

Maybe we should all just call it done and save the grief?

Or call a Do-over? crazy

I think we get a short do-over in the next few days, then it's back to our 'normal' 40F temps. crazy

I just hope our summer temps aren't as above average as the winter has been. If they are we'll be looking at 100F+ temps... sick

It hasn't been so bad if you keep it simple and do a little work. I've been walking out from landings with minimal gear and I've had none of these problems. Fishing has been OK--not as good as last year, but better than some others. I guess I don't need a do-over....I need more time to fish between now and ice out!

Keep your chin up Steve, the best ice fishing of the season is just around the corner!! I'd just about give up the whole winter of fishing (and I practically have due to work) and just take the last 3 weeks in March in the NW Angle. Best walleye fishing in the world in my opinion.

Ya but Jim you live in God's country and can be on the lake in an 1hr. I have to drive half way across the state to get to really good ice! cry But, I am not one to fold it up and will be out there untill the end. It just seems like a lot of people going in and losing their gear this year? crazy How do you leave your auger or flasher at the launch? shocked

It has been the best fishing I have had up here in the DL area. Early ice aggressive Walleyes now Crappies are in abundance. No problem driving on the ice (at least the lakes I fish)and I have been able to venture out and find new Hot Spots; and the best is yet to come when the Crappie bite heats up even further in March. Lack of snow has kept the fish active IMO, but it could have been a little colder to make more ice is the only downside.

Yeah, this year has been awesome, and I can't wait for the late-ice bite to get here. It's easy for those of us who live close to lakes, of course, so sorry to hear you've gotta drive across your state, leech.

But the fishing's been amazing so far, and I LOVE the fact that there have been next to nobody on the ice. On the reef I usually fish on Mille Lacs, there are usually a hundred houses. This year there are two. TWO. And whether it's the lack of pressure or the lack of snow or the lack of ice or whatever, it's been fun so far. Bummer it's almost over. frown

It's not like I haven't been getting out. I have been to Mill Lacs 3 times, Red Lake once & Burntside in Ely once so not feeling to bad. It's just that is about half a normal winter fishing schedule so far! cry

It's good hearing that some have had a good season, it has been my least fished and least productive season in the last 8 years at least! I guess they kinda go hand in hand. Hoping for a chance to find some fish at late ice, either that or start getting the canoe ready for open water.

I don't have an ATV or Snowmobile... and the passat physically shakes when we approach water (or if i breathe on it wrong. Cripes), so this season has been great for me.

Can walk out to spots a mile off shore without too much effort draggin my otter sled, eskimo auger, [expletive deleted] cabelas hub shack...

fishing's been great too.

Although, I am a southern boy at heart. These winters and I don't get along, so I'm more than ready for open water. Until then... ice fishing will continue to help me get through these next few months. Late ice panfishing is a blast!

The local merchants aren't as gleeful. Many took a huge hit with the state shut-down and now a lean Winter? I am hopeful that they can recover this Summer.

    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
