axelman
Hey I am new to spearing and i just bought a spear last night. I was wondering if you guys have any tips as I am planning on spearing out of my (red in color) Eskimo quickfish 3. Also do you have to have a decoy or can your throw a sucker down on a line? If any of you guys spear in the west metro do you have a recommendations on a good lake I was planning on going to lake minnewashta or lake virgina. One last thing does Cabin fever sporting goods in Victoria sell decoys? mmeyer
Axelman, you can use a sucker on a harness or an artificial. I'm new to spearing this year as well and it's been a blast. I finally was able to stab a few within the last week. As far as using the quicklip, you should be good. I'm using a Fatfish which is similar. One suggestion would be to get some rugs to put down on the floor. Today when I was out I forgot my mats and I had a couple fish come in but took off at the slightest movement. After that I grabbed the floor mats out of my truck and put them down around the hole. I have several fish come in after that and they came in great.Good luck and have fun! Gordie
Axelman welcome to the addiction beware you may never jig a stick until the spearing season closes I use suckers on a harness and yes you can use a hook but then no other jigging can be done if your looking for a fake decoy start with red/white its pretty universal and try and jig some daredevils/spoons also the pike casnt resist them spoons either. Laska
build a floor for your quickfish and you will want to use your quickfish every year thats what I do most of the time. Somewhere on here is the plans for a spear shack floor plan for the floor I built its awesome.

axelman
what time do you guys recommend going out spearing? I went out today at like 4 till 5:30 in the afternoon but I couldn't really see so great because the water was a little murky But I don't know if I was in the right depth it was 10ft deep. You don't have to give me your spot but can you guys tell me a couple lake in the west metro that have good clarity and some pike? Also any general spearing tips would be great thanks. Gordie
Give Long Lake a try its not far from you look for the weeds.I like spearing in the mornings but this year most of the pike we have got seem be speared 11am to 2pm very different year this season .The shallow weeds are still doing good up this way this year I think because their is no snow cover and the weeds still hold a lot of O2 and that means food for little fish which means food for Big fish awe you know how it works.Good Luck
Huey
I think there is a Long Lake near you. We had a get together a couple years ago. The water clarity was very good. If you go on the DNR HSOforum, you cn look up lakes on the Lkefinder section. The lake info includes the sechi disk reading, which is a measure of how clear the water is. A deeper reading means the water is clearer.Late afternoon has usally been a good time for spearing for me. The fish activity usually picks up, but like you said it can get hard to see as the light fades. I don't know what the best time of day is. Lots of guys like to get going early, o'dark thirty. Good luck with the new decoy. Red and white is a good choice.
