I've got some money to spend and I have been trying to decide what to do with it.

What would you do if you had an LX3, buy something better like a LX7 or get an underwater camera? Also if you went for the camera which one would you get?

I would go with the camera. It offers a whole different level to fishing. Yes you can't use them all the time, too dark or dirty water, but it sure is nice to see what is actually down there when you can see the marks on the flasher but nothing is biting. A lot of times it is just small perch. I upgrade my 3 to a 5 and to be honest I probably should have went to a 7. The 3 is a pretty good unit and a camera is fun at times. Especially for the kids. Get the camera and do the upgrade next year, that way you can have more stuff.

Go with the camera! I decided to upgrade my vexilar to an fl-18 and really wished I had the camera today. I've been hunting walleyes in a new lake and finally found some fish in about 30 ft. Could NOT get them to hit, camera would have at least let me know if I had finally found the Eyes!

You're in between a rock and a hard place. Me...I'd upgrade the flasher. Like someone else mentioned, cameras are limited. A flasher will work no matter if you're in 20 FOW or 100 FOW, clear water vs. dirty water, current or no current, checking holes, checking depth etc. The problem is, you already have a decent flasher.

I have an LX-5 and rarely fish an area where I HAVE to have a different cone angle, zoom, fine line, etc. I use my flasher at about 70% of it's full function most of the time. The LX-3TC is a great unit and you may as well stick with it if you haven't seen any limitations thus far.

On a side note, I wouldn't mind a camera for seeing the bottom composition. I have a good feeling that they'll have a smart phone app soon enough though...just like Navionics did with their mapping technology.

P.S. My buddy refuses to use his camera when fishing for walleye. He claims it spooks more fish than anything else.

I was in somewhat the same boat earlier this year. Had some money from x-mas to blow and was thinking about a camera. I was talked out of it by a bunch of people on here and glad I took their advice. Upgraded from ice armor to striker ice and couldn't be more happy.

Upgrade your flasher..LX-5 or LX-7.

Thanks for sll the replies. My LX3 is the older one but I did get the upgrade.

I'm still undecided but I am leaning toward a new flasher. Good idea about upgrading the flasher, selling the old one and buying a used camera.

I wouldnt get a 7 until next season. 1st year flashers always have little quirks to work out. I have a feeling next years 7 will be much improved but thats just my gutt speaking I have no proof or 1st hand info from Marcum.

Truthfully I have seen and used the 7 and I like the way my 5 reads better.

As far as upgrading or getting a camera I would surely upgrade and keep the 3 for the kids or visitors. Camers just dont work in enough places.

I would think it depends on what you fish for. When fishing walleyes I hardly ever use my camera. It seems that walleyes are very camera shy and don't like the camera hanging down there.

Now, if you fish for panfish I would say get a camera. It's nice to see the fish you are going after and panfish are not camera shy at all. You can pull the bait away from the little ones and wait for the big guys to move in. I have done this with crappies, sunnies, and perch and it works well.

I have also learned a lot about the lakes that I fish with my camera. It's nice to see what's down there and what kind of structure the fish are relating to. It helps with the learning curve on new lakes.

Good luck in your search! smile

All LX-7's will be equal no matter when it's made due to the ability to update via downloads over the internet...

Keep your Lx3. Upgrade to tc if they offer that still. Get a camera & keep your flasher. I always thought flashers are the way to go, but once you have fished with a camera it is hard to go back. I still use my old trusty LX3, but with my Aqua Vu micro right along side. It is nice to see the bottom structure & when a fish has your jig in their mouth.

Is the Lx3 with upgrade the same exact thing as the lx3tc? If so he would not upgrade to the tc... What is it you are looking to upgrade for? Dual beam? More power? AR AR AR, or SFL and 1/4 inch better target separation? Lots of guys on here have said they see no reason to change from their 3. Just curious.

Cameras and flashers both have their unique uses / features

Flashers:

Can be used day or night

shows the whole water column

There is no cable down there for a pike to wrap around once they are hooked on (still a bit bitter about that one)

Cameras:

You can see exactly what type of fish and structure are down there

Very entertaining for new people (and old)

Lets you see when the fish bite, easier to set the hook on soft bites

I put the fake weeds on mine and it seems to make a little structure that the fish like to hang around.

The camera has helped me fine tune my presentations by letting me see exactly how the fish react to my jigging/quivering/stillness

Personally I think that a flasher is a flasher, I know that there are really expensive ones out there that do have nice features, but as long as your flasher shows a good line where your lure is and another good line were the fish is I would keep it and purchase a camera to go with it.

there seems to be a lot better end of season deals on cameras vs. flashers anyways.

So for me I would take middle of the road flasher and middle of the road camera over a high end product of just one.

Flasher is a flasher in my book, sure the LX 7 might have some more options, but it is basicly going to do the same thing has you're LX-3. Sure the LX-7 would have a bunch more flashy [PoorWordUsage] on it, but do you really need it or want it. You're LX3 is a good unit. I'd jump for a camera since they are so handy to have & use. If you get one though, I'd buy one of good quality. I'm really looking at getting the Camera/Sonar unit all in one from vex then I've got both tools and can use either or both.

I view it this way spend money on new flasher-have same capabilites. Spend money on camera & you add another tool to ur fishing game.

    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
