Anyone use an Argo or MAX II 6X6 for ice fishing?

I hear they work pretty good, and they float if you break through. my only concern, if you did put it through, and you are floating nicely, is, could one drive it back on the ice, or are you stuck there until someone winches you out?

i think for the most part your stuck, but hey at least your floating.

i ment i drove a 4x4 8 wheels total, my father in law sells them and we were playing with the demo.

We use one with tracks and it works awesome Ive been in shallower water and broke through and it climbed up no problem but not sure if we were hitting the bottom for help or not. We do have some big spikes we made to screw onto the tracks if need be fortunately haven't had to use them.

i dont own one but have ridden on some. they are some great mashines. i did one time see one get hung up on some heavy snow. three young guys were just driving around on a lake i was on and didn't have a problem that i could see until the slowed down in some heavy snow and two of the guys had to get off. then the other guy got it going and they had no problem that i could see after that. but they did drive a faster pace after that. good luck.

I had a Big Max back in the late seventies, but no tracks. I only got it stuck once in the summer in mud about 2' deep. If the snow in the winter was deep and soft, it was mostly no go. BUT I saw a demo of a Max with tracks and that thing was awesome in the snow. I don't know if it would climb out of a hole in the ice with tracks, but if anything had a chance, a Max or Argo would.

BTW, I did a test drive of an Argo 8x8 a couple months ago. Lots of power, but nowhere near as fast as my Big Max. That old girl of mine had a 440 cc engine in it and was clocked on a dirt road at just a tad under 40!

There is a vid on Utube of some people in Canada or Alaska running a 8 wheel and they are going through some stuff! I love the thought of going anywhere on a lake but having to haul the thing off for a break down maybe a nightmare finding something to pull it? wink

Pro's----With tracks its truly an "all terrain" vehicle if ever there was one. Myriad of options to add on including heater, enclosed cab, auger rack etc etc to make an ideal ice fishing machine. Comes with a bit of piece of mind knowing it floats if you do bust through.

Cons---It is a bit more effort to transport than an atv or sled, and COST. Last time I priced them out, if I remember correctly, was looking at around $13,000-$14,000 fully loaded with tracks, cab etc. Definitely not cheap! Also, with a sled or atv you get a machine that can also serve other forms of recreation such as trail riding. Argos etc arent a whole lot of "fun" to drive after one gets tired of just seeing what ya can run it through.

Of course, none of the other ones float either, which was kind of the point, wasn't it?

That sure wasn't my experience with my Max. I used it to get to ice fishing spots a mile or more away before cars could go out (didn't worry too much about thin ice, although I would now), to get way back in the woods for deer hunting, even summer fishing. I would pull it on a trailer behind my IH Scout with a fishing boat on the Scout on topcarriers. When the Scout couldn't go any further, I hitched the trailer to the Max, put the boat & gear on the trailer and kept going to one of the best fishing lakes there ever was. Remember, this was long before 3 wheelers or quads and before SUV's were called SUV's. It just about killed me when I had to sell Max; I hated doing the responsible thing!!

BTW, a decked out Argo is now a LOT more than $14,000 now, which is why I don't have one now.

    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
