First Bad Dog Experience

I know this has been covered a lot, but I've never chimed in as I didn't have anything to add..until now. I'll also say right off that I love dogs and don't normally mind them at all.

Went out on Saturday, hoping for a few hours of peace, quiet, maybe a few fish. You know, a little "me-time"

Got my holes drilled and my portable set up for base camp and started hole hopping. Found a promising spot on the weed line for the tip-up, so I set that up as well.

There were quite a few people across the lake, but I didn't pay them much mind.

Was jigging in one hole when I looked up to see a large lab bolting directly towards me. He didn't look mean or anything, so I wasn't too concerned about that, but he literally ran halfway across the lake to get to me.

For the next 20 minutes he wanted to play fetch. He would go around to my holes, grab a chunk of ice, bring it over and drop it in front of me, or in my lap. If I didn't pick it up and throw it, the dog started barking at me. His mouth was cut from the ice he was carrying, so my coveralls were getting full of blood as he dropped ice on me.

I would tell him "no", but then the barking would start. I looked at the group across the lake and threw up my arms in surrender, but no one came to retrieve the dog. He bumped into me a few times, almost taking my rod out of my hand. He knocked over my bucket and peed about 8 feet from the entrance to my shelter.

The last straw was when he went over to my tip-up, grabbed it and pulled it out of the hole. I had had enough and began walking towards the group. At that point the dog took off in front of me and went back to his group.

I guess nothing surprises me anymore, and it's not like it ruined my day, but c'mon folks....Your dog is an extension of you, and it's just as rude to have them do this kind of stuff as if you were doing it yourself.

Yup I hear ya. I just had a guys dog Pizz all over my new Thermal Otter Lodge! I yelled to the guy that his dog had just pizzed on my house and he called the dog to him but then went in his house to fish and left the dog to run all over the ice again. Guys like that give others who control their dogs on the ice a bad rap. Guy didnt even say sorry or anything. I was tempted to go pizz on his house but thought better of it after my wife reminded me that I shouldnt get all fired up over it.

Northlandr: Sometimes just not worth lifting a guys leg is it. Wonder what would happen if we made a fake fire hydrant, paint it red and just slide it out onto the ice. Might take care of the dog for awhile.....just saying......

i always carry my phone with me to keep in touch with wife & check in with her......i would have called the authorities over a dog without a leash on public property, absoultely no excuses for that behavior IMO. incedently, i also had a choc lab "interested" in my gear as it ran up to me with owner 30 yards back...started sniffin my area pretty heavy and my tolerance line quits as soon as my stuff gets touched, anyway i gave the owner 1 hard look & he whistled for the dog as they went to see a friend bout 50 yards from me. im all for letting them run but if they invade my space (meaning touch my stuff)thats where i draw the line. i am on public property as well on the lake but i consider my possesions private items and no excuse for someone elses animal to bother a stranger. if i ever saw a dog in "relief mode", i would make sure that dog never wanted to get within 20 feet of me again with my snowboots, i am an animal lover first and foremost but they also need to be held accountable of actions just like their owners. as a good trainer will tell ya, no such thing as a bad pet, just bad owners.

p.s....and the actions i posted above are no different than what treatment i would give my own pet abusing someone elses property either, animals need to be trained to respect just like humans.

Pound that dog over the head with a shovel and he'll leave you alone. A nice punch in the chest, or bop in the head will work also. Grab him by the ears and pick him up.

Dog wants to jump, a strong knee in the chest will keep them at bay.

You don't need to knock the dog out for them to learn, but being a victim never solves anything. Next time take the situation into your own hands.

If you'd get mad that someone would pound your dog, keep your dog on a leesh. Simple as that.

I've had some good and bad experiances with random dogs on the ice over the years.

Good,

Got a little fishing buddy for a few hours up on LOW in the sleeper, nice little guy.

Bad,

My female mix breed got inpregnated in the back seat of my car watching flags. Not much you can do if you know what I mean!

My brothers dog got attacked by a dog watching flags. Luckily my brothers dog had a muzzle on. If the muzzle was off the other dog could have passed away that day...

I love dogs but if a dog was bleeding on me and getting into my stuff wouldn't be very happy about it. More than likely would have called animal control if in your shoes.

Was on Medicine 2 weekends ago with a buddy. There was a guy that came over to us and fished 15 yards or so away. He had a big Golden Retriever which was a nice dog at first. Well about 6:30 the fish come in, I threw a 18 incher on the ice that "was" gonna be lunch tomorrow. A few minutes later I hear the dog outside of the house smelling around, step outside to grab another beer and notice Walter is no longer around. Went over the dudes house and tell him what I assume happened and he appoligizes and offers me 3 dink Crappies for my loss. I said I'm good and went back to fishing. We laughed about it the rest of the night. When we went to leave grabbed the tip up and flag was not up however 2nd Walleye of the day was on, I guarded that one real good!!

I have 2 dogs of my own (labs) when i bring them i only bring 1 animals are animals and sometimes "forget" to mind their manners. That being said i keep my dog contained and by that i mean in the house with me or on a long leash so he can run around but not away. if i let them loose to run and just plain be a dog im there playing with them. if they are entertained they are going to hang around. I work hard to keep control of my animals, I love em thats why they are with me. It makes me mad to hear about dogs running all over the place and not being taken care of when i work so hard at it (not hard if you just do it) I dont want my dog pulling my own tip up out so i sure as heck dont want him doing it to someone else. For those out there that have had to deal with bad pet owners I apologize!! Please dont be mad at the dog be mad at the owner. The dog doesnt know he/she is being bad he/she just knows your giving them more attention than their owners.

To funny, when I was telling a buddy that night that had been out with me every other outing and getting skunked he said the same thing! That lake is tougher then ever for Walleye. 8 trips so far 6 targeting Walleye and 2 fish to boot, thts not just me thats my group! frown

Rather than getting phyiscal with a dog, with the owner might not appreciate, you can get cans of spray citronella to deter them from your area. Commonly used in anti-bark collars, so it's not the same as like using pepper spray or something.

Matt what size crappie you got there in your avatar>?

I had an experience with a crappie thief golden retriever once on one of my area lake I like to fish. Ends up being that the dog is renown for stealing peoples fish. It was a nice dog, but I will not keep my fish on the ice anymore, but rather in the shack or bucket or bottom of the sled. I agree that owners should take responsibility of there animals, and also am in agreement with the disiplinary actions but to a certain extent. I would first let the owner know of the problem......

That is funny Jarrid, we had a lab on flake that would steal everyones fish if they threw them on the ice. A buddy pulled a nice 28" eye when we were in highschool and wanted to get it mounted so he buried in the snow next to the side of the shack to cool so he could take it home. A hand of cards later we walked out to take another look and the fish was gone, nothing but puppy tracks near the house. I'm sure the guy with the dog was pleased with his "catch", we never did find the fish or the hounder that stole it grin Talked to some other people in shacks around us and they reported they had fish stolen by a canine as well but we never saw anyone out fishing with a dog the whole year. Must have come off the shore and returned with his prizes grin

Worthless slob dog owners are my worst pet peeve (no pun intended). madmad Anyone who lets their dog run loose and harass others not only has no respect for the well-being of others but also doesn't give a rip about the dog, as all kinds of harm can come to a dog that is bothering someone else.

I will absolutely 100% of the time make a phone call if someone else's dog is creating a problem and while I try to avoid most other conflicts, I am VERY QUICK to let rude dog owners know what I think of them! mad If your dog jumps on some dude and whizzes on his portable and the guy flips his lid and tells you what kind of a @$%#$ing $#%#@$%ing %@#$%#$@%er you AND your grandmother are, that guy is probably ME! wink

I've have three comments:

One - No one loves your dog except you.

Two - When someone's dog shows up at my fishing spot or in my campsite I grab a piece of rope, hook it to the dog and escort it to the owner who is always nearby. Then I hand the rope over and tell the owner to tie up dog.

Three - There is never a reason to punch, beat or kick a dog. If I saw you doing that you would have some trouble with me. Anyone who would do that needs to take a long look in the mirror.

I think I'd have enough patience if a dog messed with my tip up once or was bugging me, for at least a while, but if that f'er pizzed on my portable, that dog is geting a kick to the face.

Hopefully Down Deep is fishing on another lake.

Sounds like a young lab to me: may not be fully trained yet, but they will be full of energy. But if that's the case bring a leash and keep the dog nearby while you are fishing. Or bring a tennis ball and just use tip-ups for fishing. I wouldn't take my dog in the boat until she was 6 years old: too much energy before that to keep her in a confined space for any period of time.

would u change your mind if the dog was energetic enuff to play that it locked on to your foot/ankle/leg?

I am a dog lover and owner, we have 2 labs and a beagle. The number of times I have had my dogs fishing with me in the boat or on the ice is zero. My fishing partner also has a lab that stays at home. I do not think it is fair to either the dog or the people around you to bring your dog with if you cannot pay 100% attention to it. I am not able to do this while fishing so the dogs stay at home. I'm positive that my 3 year old lab would have an absolute blast running around on the ice bugging everyone within sight and beyond but he stays at home because I know I can't fish and watch him at the same time.

Lol.

You can take 2 months to train a dog not to do something, or 10 seconds... Difference of opinion i guess.

I'll treat someone elses dog the same way i'd treat my own.

Was on leech last week, went to the guide's house. We started talking and his big dog (can't remember breed, pushing 100lbs) ran right up to me, first jump he got a knee in the chest right in front of the owner. Dog yelped, and didn't do it again. Owner - guide, said "Same thing i'd do".

I teach dogs the hard and fast way because the last thing i want them to do is to jump on a child, or someone who can't defend themself.

Like i said before. You don't want to see someone quickly train your dog for you...put it on a leesh.

Interesting topic....I am generally anti out-of-control dogs out in the water, but I don't mind when they run over on the ice and check out my minnow bucket. I'm bothered if they grab my fish, make constant noise, or refuse after numerous warnings to leave me alone. Now that I think about it, that's the exact same way I feel about other people's children. smile

    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
