marshmallow

Recommended Posts

Was up Nort' With A Buddy This past New Year Weekend.. All Weekend I Had To Put Up With Him " Slammin " Doors .." Slammin Cupboards " .. Tipping Things Over .. We Got Into A Dis - Agreement Over The Issue .. I Told Him What I Thought Of All The Consistant Noise .. And Fish House Stereo " Cranked Up " .. He Said Who Ever Thinks Noise And Comotion Effects Fishin' Doesn't Know Much .. It Doesn't Effect Much .. Everytime I Would Walk Out The Door I Would Close It Normally .. Not Slam .. You Ever Fish With People Like This .. It Affects Especially When The Ice Is Not That Thick .. Or Snow Cover To Muffle Some Of The Noise .. If I Don't Know What I Am Talkin' About .. Than I Guess I Do !!!!

I have been fishing a smaller lake for the past week for eyes and doing pretty good.

One night I had a bunch of people move in on me and I have never heard so much noise, dog barking and whatever.

One of the dudes came over and saw I has some eyes lying on the ice. He said man you are lucky as we have not got a bite.

I said in a polite way, if you want to catch some fish, since we are fishing in 4.5ft of water, talking quieter and not banging your feet on the ice would go a long ways in helping the bite.

He laughed at me and went back just a chatting away.

late he came back when I was packing up to go and he saiud are you quitting and I said yes, I have my limit. he just shook his head and went back to that lucky thing.

Some people. if you want to party, fine but if he wanted to catch fish, one could at least try. That group may never catch a fish in shallow water the way he goes bout it.

I don't know. Sometimes noise seems to make no difference, and other times it does. You can drill a hole and drop your transducer down and mark fish, and they're not effected by the noise of the drill. Truck and snow mobile traffic doesn't matter sometimes either. And other times it can totally turn the fish off.

I'v had it go both ways. I have been fishing nice and quiet and not catching a thing, and then had a snowmobile cruze around me a couple of times and boom I caught a couple fish, and then dead, so I turned on my radio pretty loud and boom.

But I have to say, it usually goes the other way, quiet is usually best, especially in shallow water.

I have also partied hard in a shack out on Lake Of The Woods and everyone left with their limit.

I was on Lake of the Woods last week. Moved in from our day house in 26 feet of water to our sleeper in 15 feet at about 3:30Pm. Believe it or not, absolutely every time a truck from the resort or wheeler would go by we got bites--I mean bites, not one, but 2 or 3 from the 4 holes. I always swore by silence and no noise, but this time was the exception! Always willing to learn--no absolutes in fishing.

I agree with the guys that say it goes both ways.

If the fish are inactive, I think a little noise gets them moving.

If they are really active, I don't think noise, or lack there of plays much of a factor.

Early ice and shallow water (say less than 7ft) being the exception in my book.

Just got back from Red and did an unofficial experiment myself.

I would run the generator for a couple hours (to watch a movie), then kill it an listen to the radio softly for a couple.

The fish did seem to bite better with it running, this was over a period of a few days too. Not a huge difference, but it definately didn't hurt or help fishing in a significant way. This was in 10-12 fow with about 16" of ice and little snow cover.

But Is The Slamming The Doors .. Cupboard Doors .. Carelessly Dropping .. Tipping Over .. Breaking Things .. Two Guys Only .. Necessary ?? Yeah It Really " Stokes " Me Sometimes .. I Guess I Am Not That Way .. The More Beers He Has The More Careless And Sloppy He Gets ..

Ok, leave out the part about whether or not you caught fish, sounds like the guy was a tool. A couple guys is a small space can be a real good time or a real bad one. Live and learn. My son and I can live out of one of our wheelhouses for a week at a time with no conflicts at all. I can think of alot of my friends that are pretty good guys but would drive me nuts real quick if we were cellmates. Maybe your over use of periods got to him.... nobody's perfect..... grin

This is why I will only take people to "fish" who actually want to fish. If they want to drink and get sloppy wasted, they can go to the bar. Drunk people annoy me, so bringing them into a confined space of a fish house isnt something Id enjoy.

I think it makes a difference how deep the water is where you are fishing. Deeper water not as big of a deal but i think shallower and you are going to affect the bite most of the time in a negative way. There was a post about trucks driving by and the house getting bites. The deal there is YOU weren't the one making the noise. The truck was. It probably was pushing fish to you. I am a believer in being quiet. If you want to party, drink, talk and laugh loud go ahead. Just don't expect to catch much of anything. And yes I have fished with people like that... once. That was all I needed.

I don't think sudden slam and bang noises could accomplish anything other than making fish spooky. It's not like slamming a truck door is going to make an otherwise lethargic fish ready to feed, but I'd say it's very likely to have the opposite effect. Being loud when you fish is at best stupid, and at worst, rude to the people with you or set up near you.

I go out of my way to be quiet when I fish. I'll fish with someone who makes a lot of noise....once. I have seen excessive noise by other people negatively affect the bite so I have learned to avoid places where the local cavalry will roll in at dusk and start F-ing things up. I think it's astounding that someone would go to the nth degree and any expense to make sure they had the right spot, right bait, right jigs, gear in working order, electronics ready.....then slam doors, move their wheeler around their shack 12 times, blast the radio, and generally do everything they can to spook the fish they came out for.

I'm with you marshmallow--you need to find a different fishing partner, and never, ever tell this dude if you're on a hot bite so he doesn't come set up near you in the future.

Its a pain but not worth losing a friendship over IMO I would let it go and as been said not invite him back to the house and if he ever asks to go tell him the fish are not biteing.

I do remember a time on Mille Lacs that the noise did help the perch bite and at first it seemed like every time a truck drove by the house which was next to the plowed road the perch would bite. We were ready to take turns driving by ourselves but we turned on the tunes and the louder they got the better the bite was. I always wondered what the guys around us thought but we were slamming the jumbos so it didnt matter. BTW the closest house to us was at least 50 yrds away.

I know it doesnt always happen but sometimes it does.

I would have to say the when Elvis started playing on the iPod, the walleyes started biting this weekend one night.

I have seen both scenarios...we had at least 15 people in a permanent house eating supper with the music up and the generator on and we were pounding the fish.

I feel radio noise or talking won't typicaly be heard by a fish. Vibrations or pounding on the fish house and such will.

When I was a boy my Dad caught a pike on a tip up right before dark. The fish went right into the bucket an hour plus drive home and it was time to clean our days catch. The last pike caught was the first to hit the filet knife. To our suprise it was not dead. Much to my Moms regret the bath tub was filled up and the pike was placed in very cold water. It took about 3 days for the pike to regain it's full strength. We could talk loud and even yell in the small bathroom and the pike sat still. As soon as we made footsteps we knew it could feel it. When you tapped the outside of the tub the pike would go nuts.

This was a very simple but effective method to test the noise and vibration and how at least pike react to it.

We used to keep sunnies in a very large aquarium. After several months the fish would get very used to us and vibrations didn't seem to upset them. My thoughts are the fish got used to their new surroundings.

Auger noise has helpped in the past. Most recently I stopped by my nephew and his buddy nad proceeded to drill holes 15' away so we could fish by each other. We were in 11' of water and by the time I finished drilling my second hole he had his first walleye up to the hole.

I've noticed this on several occasions while hole hoping too. Right after I drill the hole there are a bunch of fish showing up below but then I come back a few minutes later and they are all gone.

Sometimes I think noise/vibration brings in the curious fish. Other times it likely spooks the skiddish fish. Still, I would rather not fish with somebody banging around and making loud noise all weekend.

A good fishing buddy is a good "catch". My wife once asked how I could sit 6 feet away from my buddy in a 2 man wheelhouse for 4 straight days only getting away from each other when we wandered outside. I guess it works, because it never bothered me and we go every year. My wife on the other hand... we may drive on the lake together and leave separated. crazy

It was mentioned on the URL forum, but it was true when we where up there too. Everytime the outfitter seemed to drive up to check on us, we got fish. He must have thought we were on them constantly, but shortly after he would leave, dead sea.

I went to the Duluth aquarium last week and they have a quiz there. Several of the questions are about fishes ability to hear and what they use (Lateral line and inner ear). What the quiz states is that fish can only hear 5' away with either or both of their abilities.

I believe vibration has a bigger effect on fish than sound does.

Agreed. It works both ways.

    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
