Movies You Had to Force Yourself to Watch But Ended Up Liking

I had been passing this one up for awhile on Netflix but watched it the other day and found it to be a very good and interesting movie.

Kill the Irishman

The title just did not lure me in. It's a movie made on the lines of movies like Good Fellas and Casino, which are two movies I also put off watching for years and found interesting when I did watch them.

I find it interesting that some of my all time favorite movies are ones I did not care to view or neglected to view for years after their release.

Anyone else have movies they would recommend based on skipping over them for years and finding out they are good after the fact?

Kill the Irishman is one of my favorite all time movies, and I did the same thing you did. I put off watching it for a long time, but once I did, was glad that I did. I can't think of any movies off the top of my head aside from this one.

One movie that I've heard is good, but I've had no desire to watch is one called Tree Of Life. We'll see if I get around to watching that one though.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. wink Yep, one I tossed aside until I had nothing to do and sat down with the family. More out of Curiosity on how a movie could work like this, actually consist of a plot an actor like Brad Pit would be involve with. In the end I liked the movie.

Ah-Ha I have another one. Which leads into yet another one. I just watched True Grit (the new/Jeff Bridges) and now I am talking like I am in the old west. I watched it after creating this thread and gave it shot being up on the top of the list. The description honestly turned me totally off it but it turned out to be a good movie. Enough I watched the original True Grit staring John Wayne.

Jeff Bridges bring in yet another movie I passed up back in the day of rentals. Big Lebowski. Passed it up based on John Goodman (which changed my outlook towards him) and the cover having bowling on it. Finally, on a whim, rented it and after the first 20 minutes started to laugh. Now IMO it is a classic.

Tree of Life and UP. winksmile I am game. Could be a good thread if people shared these kind of movies. I like and take tip-offs on good movies.

One that I thought I would never like, even after wading through it the first time, was "Pulp Fiction". The second time I saw it, and now (like 20 times later) it gets better each time. Great lines to 're-quote' in certain circles.

Another old(er) movie, "True Romance" based on the title, I would have never, ever watched it. A buddy of mine with similar movie tastes forced me to watch it. Quite possibly, one of the greatest action movies in my 'collection'.

The Manchurian Candidate (1962 version)

Manchurian candidate is a little slow for todays audiences, but the story is so much better than the remake... it's not even funny. I hated the remake. I love the original. It took me a long time to get around to watching it simply because it's tough for my generation to make it through the slower paced black n white dramas. Angela Lansbury and Frank Sinatra.

Dr. Strangelove (or how I learned to stop worrying and love the bomb) is a classic, I had been meaning to watch as I am a big Kubrick fan. I can't say why it took me so long to get around to it... but holy cow. Heh, me and my hippy friends in college watched this movie the day "shock and awe" went down in 2003.

Burnt by the Sun is a Russian film from 1994. It tells the story of a revolutionary hero and what happens to him and others like him during the rise of Stalin. I didn't hear about this one until 2003 during a college course, my professor had recommended I watch this based on my fascination with Russian history.

Being John Malkovich I watched this one for the first time Tuesday night... I am sad I waited so long to watch it. It's quite entertaining.

I got this one through netfix a few years back and thought it was going to be a James Bond type movie. The guy who played Dr. Strangeglove should have won an Oscar for that performance. Awesome movie. One of the top 5 of all time on my personal list.

As far as movies I had to force myself to watch:

"Where the Wind Shakes the Barley"- about the group of men who started the IRA. It's in English but their Irish accents are so thick I had to turn subtitles on. It was kind of slow but in the end I really like it.

Also "7 Samuri". Was listed on IMDB as one of the top movies of all time, it was made in the 30's I think. Turned out to be a pretty good one considering the time frame.
